On the Night Table [#9]: Firebird, Magic and The Grim Reaper.

Hello.

You’re probably wondering where in the world have I been, huh? Perhaps you thought that I got caught counting cards while in Vegas?  Or arrested for being drunken and disorderly? Ha. I’ll have you know, that we’re usually in bed by 9 pm Vegas time over there. We are old people! We don’t have the energy or the capability to drink our asses off into stupor.

Yes, I’ve been MIA lately, but the only excuse I can give you is that I’ve been having a slew of problems with WordPress that it’d become a deterrent to blog as often as I normally would. This week, I finally slapped myself silly and gave myself a good talking to. I mean, it shouldn’t stop me from writing, commenting and stuff, so yesterday, I just told myself that enough is enough.

Anyway, I thought I start with what’s been going on lately. This week, I have three books on my night table: The Firebird by Susan Kearsley, Third Grave Dead Ahead by Darynda Jones and On the Edge by Ilonah Andrews. These three books are great so far!

The Firebird [Slains, #2] by Susan Kearsley. As you know, I’m a fan of historical fiction. The kind that may, or may not have romance in it, but one that has an actual historical significance. I used to be a huge reader of the Russian Czar dynasty, and from what I’ve read so far, The Firebird may have origins tying to that family. I’m really loving it so far. It also has a couple of characters with mind powers: Nicola Marter has psychometry abilities. She can see an object’s history simply by touching it. Rob McMorran can see and speak to ghosts, and he also has the power to communicate via telepathy. This book is engrossing so far!

Third Grave Dead Ahead [Charley Davidson, #3] by Darynda Jones. I am completely enamoured with this series! There’s never a time when Charley doesn’t make me break out in embarrassing giggles because of her candour. I just love how different this is! I love the romance between the Son of Satan and The Grim Reaper. I love all the secondary characters, and the dead people that accost Charley at the most inopportune time. If you haven’t started on this series, you’re missing a lot!

On the Edge by Ilonah Andrews. I’ve recently fallen in love with Ilona Andrews Burn for Me book. Since I didn’t have much luck with their Kate Daniels series, I decided to try another one of theirs. And oh my God! This one is spectacular as well. I never thought I’d enjoy this kind of fantasy, but I’m so so so vested in this world! I’m 45% in, and Declan just passed his first test – quite easily at that, I’m dying to read more about this world.

Last week’s reading pile:

I managed to polish off three books. I enjoyed them all!

Swoonuary: A Month for Romance

Swoonuary (1) Now, we all know I read and review just about anything on the blog. But I’ve also been notoriously guilty whenever I read books that are purely mind candy: tasty reads but you don’t get much “nutritional value”.

This month, I decided to join in the fun with the ladies of The Bookish Groupies as they celebrate this month of romance. How, you might ask? Well, since I’m only good for one thing, and one thing only, I decided to read a few romance books this month. This is funny to me, because before drafting this post, Carmel of Rabid Reads asked her readers if they’re “seasonal readers”. I said I wasn’t. And sure enough, here I am.

Anyway, who can resist reading sugary sweet romance books? Heck, you bet your Edible arrangement I will take advantage of any excuse to read them free of guilt! While I have been slowly easing away any former hang ups I might’ve had with reading romance books in the past, I haven’t fully embraced it! So this month, I thought it’s as good a time as any.

I’m going to attempt to read the following books:

17832871

Once Upon a Rose [La Vie En Rose, #1] by Laura Florand

Right. So I’ve been mildly obsessed with Amour et Chocolat  by this author. In fact, I’m pretty sure I’ve read most of the books and novellas in this series. Rachel of The Readers’ Den recently read and loved this book, so of course I had to download a copy! Seriously, Rachel and Jasprit are going to be the death of me. Any who, looking forward to reading this one!

20799724 Burn for Me [Hidden Legacy, #1] by Ilona Andrews

I’m cheating a little bit. This one is not really pure romance, but much of the ‘flailing’ reviews on Goodreads and the blogosphere touched on how fantastic the romance is in this book. I’m also killing two birds in one store here since it’s an Urban Fantasy; a genre that I decided to explore more this year. I’m dying to read this book!

20910177 Keep Me Safe [Slow Burn, #1] by Maya Banks.

I just know this book is going to be a sizzler! I’ve read a few of Ms. Banks books, and if those are any indication of what I’m in for, there’s no doubt that I’ll guiltily happily enjoy this one!

So I hope you’ll check out all the books that will be reviewed during this month. The ladies involved in this event are sweet bloggers who reached out to me to see if I’d be interested. Check out their blogs, will you?

Happy reading!
