Life Lately

Hey, all!

Am I glad to be writing a post again! It’s been soooo long. I’m sorry for the disappearing act once again. The Spring cleaning that I’ve started a couple of weeks back turned into little projects that kept me away from my blogging duties. But I’m back now and hoping to sustain this little burst of momentum that will keep me on track for the next few months. Lol. At some point, I’ll try and share with you what I’ve been doing on my break. But for now, I have an April recap of sorts.

April By the Numbers

All in all, I read 18 books in April and a good amount of romance novels. I started the Dark Carpathia series by Christine Feehan but after the first book, I don’t know if I should continue. Maybe I’ll give it another go and then make my decision from there. I read the Wedding Belles series by Lauren Layne. And have only managed to read one non-fiction for the month (Alter Egos by Mark Landler). I finally read a book that’s been on my wishlist since the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, The Improbability of Love started out great and petered out into a huge disappointment. Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett was ho-hum awesome. Easily my favourite read of the month. Here’s the rest of the list:

  • Promises to Keep by Genevieve Graham 4/5 stars
  • Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor 5/5 Stars
  • The Chosen by JR Ward 4/5 Stars
  • The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson 1/5 Stars
  • Geekerella by Ashley Poston 3/5 Stars
  • The Improbability of Love by Hannah Rothschild 3/5 Stars
  • Alter Egos by Mark Landler 3/5 Stars
  • Mister Moneybags by Vi Keeland & Penelope Ward 4/5 Stars
  • Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett 5/5 Stars
  • The Scribe of Siena by Melodie Winaker 5 /5 Stars
  • Mr.Β President by Katy Evans 3/5 Stars
  • Commander in Chief by Katy Evans 3/5 Stars
  • Time Was by Nora Roberts 3/5 Stars
  • Times Change by Nora Roberts 3/5 Stars
  • To Have and To Hold by Lauren Layne 3/5 Stars
  • Dark Prince by Christine Feehan 3/5 Stars
  • For Better or Worse by Lauren Layne 3/5 Stars
  • To Love and To Cherish by Lauren Layne 3/5 Stars

A barrage of 3-star-ratings, as you can see. I did have a couple of 5-star-reads, though, so that more than makes up for what would otherwise have been an unremarkable reading month.

That’s been my April. How was yours?

  • I know exactly how things can get out of hand with life and blogging. I’ve been very behind on everything lately. I listen to books so quickly and I don’t always have time to write reviews. I get way behind on review writing, which is difficult when it comes time to write. I’m hoping that I can get all my reviews written to get me caught up this week. I hope you are having a great May.

  • April sounded like an awesome reading month for you Joy! I have Geekerella on my TBR and I’m looking forward to reading it.

  • Yay for having read tons in April πŸ˜€ That’s awesome. <3 I hope you are doing amazing, Joy, despite not blogging a lot lately πŸ™‚ All the hugs. <3 But ugh, three star books are the worst : I hope you are reading much more awesome ones now πŸ˜‰ Happy reading. <3

  • The Bumble Girl

Wow, so many good books here! I still need to read Strange the Dreamer – I am so thrilled that everyone has been giving it such good ratings!

  • Real life has been pretty time consuming for me, too, Joy, so I totally get it! πŸ™‚ I so want to pick up Alex, Approx. Love Jenn Bennett’s writing. I think I’ll try and get an audio copy.

I tried one Christine Feehan book and was not really impressed. Sort of disappointed since I’ve heard a lot of good things about here. Since then I haven’t wanted to try another.

    • You would so love Alex, Rachel! And yeah. I’ve given up on Christine Feehan’s Dark Carpathian series. It’s a good thing that my copies were from my thrifting!

  • Sara Walker

Sigh- I am sad Unexpected Everything was such a bummer for you. I was actually looking forward to that book (I really enjoyed Since You’ve Been Gone by her). I am dyyyyyyyyyyyying to read Alex, Approximately. I am waiting for the library to get it in. Hopefully soon. I am also very eager to get my hands on Strange the Dreamer- hopefully soon.

    • I think you would love Alex, Sarah. It’s so lovely. And yeah, Unexpected was so painfully long. Ugh.

  • That is quite a lot of three star ratings. But 18 books is a brilliant amount, and it must have been a lot of fun to get all of that spring cleaning project underway. I’m looking forward to seeing more of your posts though. I managed 15 books (although three were novellas.) I’m on an m/m new adult romance kick at the moment. Not sure about reviewing those books on my YA book blog though (?) Ho hum, decisions, decisions…

    • Eighteen was a surprise for me considering. 15 is also great! Especially since you’re always busy! I hope you had a great month, Olivia!

  • Wow you read a ton in April! I think I read four books the whole month! Ha ha. I’m a slow reader. I’ve heard wonderful things about Alex, Approximately. I think it’s on my TBR, but I’ll have to check just in case it’s not and add it in.

    Happy May!

    • Yeah, but you probably read four books with substance, right? Since I was pretty much in a dumpy mood – reading wise, I opted for romance and fast reads. Haha!

  • Hello, Joy! Both of us are back from a blogging slump, also mine was more of an extended hiatus….. but we’re back! I’m excited to look up all the books you loved last month and check them out!

    • Hiya, girl! I know. I missed you both. Sorely so. <3 You're back to your brilliant self, I see, so yay!

  • Welcome back from your mini-break! It’s too bad that you had so many three star books this month, but like you said, even a few five star ones balance that out. I feel like I’ve read so few five star books this year when compared with previous years! Or maybe I’m just stingy now…

    • Thanks, Danya! Right? I’m fairly easy to please so give me a couple of 5-star reads and we’ll call it even. πŸ˜€

  • 5 stars for Alex, Approximately? I am glad to hear that since I am on a verge of adding it to my immediate TBR list πŸ™‚

    • It was sooo good, also a fan of Jenn Bennett…so.

  • I thought Alex, Approximately was cute but it didn’t amaze me by any means. Strange the Dreamer on the other hand was so, so good! But then I wouldn’t expect anything else from Laini Taylor. Also, I noticed you didn’t like The Unexpected Everything, which is too bad because Matson is one of my go-to contemporary authors. Have you read Second Chance Summer?

    • Aw. That’s too bad. I really loved it. But yea, Unexpected was a total bummer for me. I do have a copy of Second Chance but I’ve yet to give it a go. Soon, I hope. And hopefully, it’ll get the bad juju of The Unexpected Everything off.

  • It was a slow reading month for me. We were really busy at work, and all I wanted to do when I got home was fall into bed.

I have seen so many good reviews for Alex, Approximately! I really want to read that one.

    Welcome back. πŸ™‚

    • Egad. I can so relate! And thank you for the welcome. πŸ™‚

  • 18 is fabulous! Alex, Approximately has caught my eye every time I’ve seen it. Have a great May!

    • Truly great considering i was in no mood to do much reading/blogging. πŸ™‚

  • Greg Hill

18 books is great! And Alex, Approximately does sound good- I keep seeing mostly good reviews. I need to add it…

    • I’d love to read your thoughts on Alex, Greg. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you review a contemporary YA before. But I also have the memory of a gnat so… Lol.

  • You got a lot of reading accomplished. I really need to read Alex, Approximately. Everyone seems to love that one. I haven’t read the Wedding Belles series by Lauren Layne. Have a great May!

    • Thanks, Carole. Yes, you must. It’s so good! And Lauren Layne’s Wedding Belles is a good series as well. πŸ™‚

  • You had a great month of reading. I managed to read 11 books, I live for the day when I can do more than that.

    • Aw. 11 is a good number! I find that I read romance novels faster than any novels and since I read a few of those this month, my numbers are a little higher than usual. πŸ™‚

      Thanks for stopping by!

  • Looks like you had a great April. I really need to start on my own spring cleaning now that school is done. Great job reading so many books πŸ™‚
    Have a lovely May!

    • Thanks, Aneta. I might have gone overboard with my Spring cleaning. Lol.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  • Spring cleaning you say? I have a house here if you are in need of continuing said cleaning… πŸ˜‰ LOL Looks like some good books there and I’d be happy to clean a few off your shelf. πŸ˜€ Hey, I tried. πŸ˜€ Hope this month rocks for you!

    • Hahaha! I wish. I never made it to the second floor of my house. So lots to do still. πŸ™‚

  • Spring cleaning can be extremely cathartic! I did that recently with a whole lot of clothes and books, and you really do feel somehow lighter and more focused afterwards, ha.

What a great reading month! I feel like some good romance reads, and you are definitely my go-to for those, so shall be scouring your blog for some recs! <3

    • Oh, I know. Especially when I’m listening to an audiobook at the same time. πŸ™‚

  • Karen

1 star for Matson? I loved Geekerella but I see it was a 3 star for you. Loved Alex, Approximately too and I still need to finish Taylor’s last series before diving into this one lol

    For What It’s Worth

    • Yep. I didn’t enjoy it at all, sadly. But I enjoyed Geekerella so don’t let the 3-star rating fool you. πŸ™‚

  • Spring cleaning is nice! I feel like I need to do a little cleaning myself XD
I did a double take on the Morgan Matson book loll… But yay for Strange the Dreamer and Alex, Approximately! I’m really looking forward to AA πŸ˜€

    • Yeah. I wish I can say I loved it like everyone did but sadly, it was not a good one for me. Strange the Dreamer, however is fantastic!

  • Wishing your May is filled with more 5 star reads! πŸ™‚ Welcome back!

  • sarabara081 @ Forever 17 Books

Ugh, I have sooooo much spring cleaning to do. My kids make it so hard to do it. I still need to read Alex, Approximately but I’m definitely going to get to it in May. I also want to read Commander in Chief after reading the first book. I didn’t love the first book but I’m hoping to like it better though seeing how you gave them both 3 stars I’m wondering how it will go for me.

    • Ughhhh Commander in Chief was boringggggg. But I hope you’ll enjoy it more than I did.

  • I’ve missed you, Joy! <3
I think you've had a great reading month. I'm especially excited that you enjoyed Alex! πŸ™‚
    Have a good May!

    • AW. It’s great to be back! Thanks, Nick!

  • ChristinaBookAddict

Wow! You had an awesome reading month! Looking forward to your thoughts on Strange the Dreamer.

    • Gah. I wish I can write a review for that one that easily. I might have to re-read it so I can write a somewhat coherent review. Lol.

  • 18 books. I’m so jealous. I’m really glad you loved Alex, Approximately – I bought a copy! I’ve been enjoying your decorating posts on Instagram!

    • Romance novels are like bag of chips for me. I can finish them in one sitting. Lol. And thanks! <3

  • kindlemom1

You still read a lot so that is awesome and yay fro spring cleaning and projects. They are so satisfying when they are over aren’t they?

    • They are. Mind you, i was stressed and confused for most of the time because I couldn’t figure out what kind of style I was going for. Lol.

  • I love that you describe Alex, Approximately as ho-hum awesome. That’s a very interesting description. πŸ™‚

I see that you REALLY didn’t like Unexpected Everything, and now I’m really curious, since everyone seems to rave about Matson all the time. Are you going to write a review for that one? Or, wait? Did I miss it? I’m going to go double-check right now…

    • It was such a lovely read. I think I read it in one sitting. πŸ™‚

  • I read the Time books by Nora Roberts a really long time ago. I also read one of the Wedding Belle books-the first one. I think I have a novella that goes with it in my tbr pile. 18 books is a great number and I am glad you read so many 5 star ones. I wish I had energy to spring clean πŸ™‚

    • I didn’t realize how old they were! I only picked it up because it was on sale on Audible so I thought I might as well read the second one.

  • I am waiting for the library to get strange the dreamer πŸ™‚
The month seemed good to me πŸ™‚

  • You loved Alex, that’s all that matters. πŸ˜€ Hey – maybe I missed it, but how did it go with the job? Are they keeping you?

    • Love, love.

Yep. They offered me full time. πŸ™‚ Yay!!!
