On the Night Table [47]: Some Leftovers

The Murderer’s Ape by Jakob Wegelius | The Rising by Bairbre Tóibín | Exit West by Mohsin Hamid | The Only Child by Andrew Pyper

I hope you all had a lovely Easter weekend. The nice weather that I was looking forward to on Friday didn’t happen but we did have a warm Saturday at least. I was able to do a lot of indoor work so the backyard Spring cleaning was postponed until next weekend.

I did a lot of projects inside the house which included revamping my living room to make it cozier. If you remember, last year, I embraced the minimalist style of home decorating so I had very limited decorations and uniformly subdued colours. Lately, though, I’ve been finding that the beauty in the eclectic mixing of colours, patterns, and textures. One of these days, I might just have to show you what I did. I took great delight in unearthing a bunch of my old home decors packed in boxes in the basement. Oddly enough, they worked splendidly well with what I was trying to achieve. Anyway, enough about that. Let me give you an update of my reading week.

This week’s pile.

I have been trying to get to a couple of books on my pile this week since they’ve been on my night table for weeks now. Sadly, I have not been getting too many for review books as of late – which is all right, I guess. I have plenty enough to read. And I really want to get rid of these so I can tackle some Net Galley books that have been sitting in my Kindle for years.

Last week.

Well, I read quite a few books last week. I managed to read 5 – it was a long weekend, after all.

The Improbability of Love started out good but it turned out to be a huge disappointment. Alex, Approximately was so awesome. Easily one of my favourite reads this year! Geekerella was fun. Mister Moneybags was a hoot. Alter Egos was interesting but I ended up raging after everything is said and done.

That was my week. How was yours?

  • I picked up Mister Moneybags this week too! I still need Playboy Pilot though!!

  • Hugs. <3 I wish to see what your home looks like 😀 Love seeing the pictures that you do share; so so beautiful. <3 I hope you are doing great Joy 😀 And that your easter was the best 🙂 Hugs.

  • Happy belated Easter! I had one of my better reading weeks last week, managing to get through 2.5 books over the long weekend. This is a huge achievement for me considering how slow I’ve been reading lately. 😀

  • I am so glad that you had a wonderful Easter, I did too but first Easter away from my family and so it was emotionally hard since its such a family holiday. I am starting to get a bit behind on my ARC’s as well, just haven’t been in the mood for them. Glad you enjoyed Vi Keeland’s book, I want to pick it up so badly.

  • Oh, please show you what you did
with home decorating. Your pictures always look like they were taken for some
    home décor catalog.

  • I had a great week and the Easter weekend was fabulous. I enjoyed it with family and some great books. I’ve just read an awesome book. Loved it so much. Glad to hear you had a great week, too. Mister Moneybags is calling my name. Sounds great.

    Have a great week. 😁

  • Greg Hill

5 books- that sounds like a pretty good long weekend to me. 🙂 Alex, Approximately has me really curious since everyone seems to love it, and I may have to give it a go. Glad you had a nice Easter weekend.

  • Ooh, you can’t say you’ve been redecorating and then add, well I might show you some day. No no no Joy you tease! I ended up spending so much of the long Easter weekend being a vegetable and reading. It was nice to just sit and do nothing. I really need to get stuck into the spring cleaning as well AND the garden. You’ve got such an incredible sense of style Joy, I want to seeeeee iiiiiiiit <3 <3

  • sarabara081 @ Forever 17 Books

I need your productivity. I always feel like I get nothing accomplished when my house is trashed 5 minutes later. lol I need to get to my copy of Alex, Approximately ASAP!

  • Your long weekend was so productive! I spent most of mine lazing about in pyjamas…whoops. I can’t wait until I finally get my hands on Alex, Approximately – I’ve heard nothing but good things so far.

  • Keertana @ Ivy Book Bindings

Alex, Approximately is one of my favorite reads of the year too!!! I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did, but it was just perfect. I hope you have a fantastic reading week ahead of you, Joy!

  • I’m happy to hear you loved Alex, Approximately! I love Jenn Bennett’s writing so I’ll have to reserve a library copy. Hopefully, there’s an audio version.

Nice that you got a chance to reuse some of your stored decorations! Great recycling job, Joy! I’d like to see some pics for sure! 🙂

  • RO

Ooh, I hope you share some pics with the new decorations soon. Lately, I’ve been trying to minimize as well, and coming up with unusual ways to use bright colors and unusual containers to make extra space. Congrats on getting 5 books read. I just started a new one called Black Widow by Daniel Silva which is filled with nail-biting suspense. It seems as if he has psychic ability about all the terror attacks overseas. Hugs…

  • Glad you like Alex, Approximately so much. I still prefer Anatomical Shape, but I’m a big JB fan.

  • You need to show us your decorating! I’m embracing the minimalist with a dash of whimsy style. Yoga dogs, bunnies and polar bears make their way into my otherwise spartan rooms. Years ago we were such bad clutter bugs it’s embarrassing to think about. I went the other extreme a year or so ago and Marie Kondo’d the heck out of my house. Now I’m slowly adding in some color and fun but only things that bring me joy, lol.

  • Jazmen Greene

You always get some of the best books!

  • Raging? Now I’m curious, is Alter Egos slanted more towards the right v more of a centerist approach?

  • Alex Approximately! I’m so excited for this book! Also… Mister Moneybags, of course. ;D

  • oh you managed well with your books there! Have a nice week girl!

  • Mister Moneybags was really fun! Not my favorite as far as the heroine goes (I could not for the life of me connect with her), but that drama…I loved it. :p

I’m embracing minimalism but keeping some things unique and funky. Gotta strike that balance!

  • shootingstarsmag

I do want to read Geekerella; it seems like a cute read! Glad you thought it was fun. Sounds like you had a nice weekend. It didn’t rain until later on Easter so it was pretty good around here too.

I am very excited to read Alex, Approximately. I am glad to see you enjoyed it. I am also looking forward to seeing your house decor.

    Have a good week Joy!

  • ChristinaBookAddict

Ahh! I am so glad to hear you enjoyed Alex, Approximately. I can’t wait to check that one out. I hope you had a nice Easter. The revamping of your living room sounds fun…I love mixing styles and patterns. I would love to see what you came up with!

  • Karen

Yay! I’m glad you ended up loing Alex, Approximately too! And I really liked Geekerella.

I’ve been watching your decorating progress over on Instagram 🙂

    For What It’s Worth

  • Eclectic is what I love as well. Hope you post some pics, you have me curious. 🙂 Good pile. I think Geekerella and Alex, Approximately peak my interest. The Alter Ego book looks like a one sided argument and I’m guessing that is why you raged?

  • oh I’d love to see what you did to your living room 😀 I love seeing how others decorate. Wish I could.
I guess I’ll have to read Alex, Approximately but a little worrried. Lots of people love it, so who knows >.<

  • I hate it when the weather doesn’t cooperate with your plans! I would love to see your decorating 🙂 I need to stop getting new books and get all of the old netgalley books on my kindle read as well. I am thinking that I will need to get my hands on Alex, Approximately. Everyone seems to love it!

  • Need to see your living room, Joy! It sounds funky, but very cool.
I’m so excited you loved Alex and thought Geekerella! Also *sob* every time I see Obama or Clinton I want to cry.
I hope you have a good week ahead, Joy! Happy reading and take care. 🙂

  • I’d love to see what you did with your living room! I remember your minimalist take last time and I loved it! 😀 I cleaned my room and binge watch some anime over the long weeknd so it was great and productive even though we didn’t go out of town 🙂

  • We had 87 degrees Sunday, but due to my allergies, I stayed indoors and cooked a roast for Easter dinner. Binge watched Orphan Black for a few days this week. If you haven’t seen it, I really recommend it. I want to see pictures of your living room now. I think I saw your different pillows on instagram? Have a good week Joy!

  • We finally had some sun yesterday but then I was inside making dinner and missed it

  • Show us the goods, Joy! We demand to see the outcome of your creativity! lol. Yay for loving Alex. It’s definitely one of my favs this year.

  • I like the sound of revamping the house a little bit, and I would love to see when it gets all done. Spring cleaning time… hm.. I’ve been studying this week, especially for the subjects I don’t enjoy so it hasn’t been great. But I have been rereading my favourite novels as my study breaks. So I’m pretty much blazing through the Twilight Saga – I’m on my last one right now. Oh, and I am so glad the new Jenn Bennett book was so epic!
