On the Night Table [44]: Reading Update

The Cursed Queen by Sarah Fine | The Dark Days Pact by Alison Goodman | I See You by Clare Mackintosh

How was your weekend? We’re about four days away from the dreaded inauguration, you guys. How are you planning on spending the day? Besides the fact that I have to work, I’m going to do my darnedest to steer clear of the social media and any tv broadcast about it. But if you guys have any suggestions on what I can do that will be more productive, let me know. I’m open to anything.

Anyway, I’ve got more January books on my night table this week. I’ve been doing so well with my review copies but I’ve also been requesting a lot of books from Net Galley lately. I’ve been bad. So so bad. Also, I just noticed that Net Galley is giving us a chance to improve our review stats so I took advantage of that this weekend by submitting the reviews for the ones that I didn’t. I’m so glad. My reviewing percentage is pretty sad, to be honest, so I’m thankful for the opportunity. It also gives me a chance to see which books I have on my Kindle that I need to read. Gah. The number is staggering.

The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan was a solid read. Gritty, gory and not at all the kind of werewolf stories I’ve read in the past. Wait For It by M. O’Keefe was a good read, but I found the characters to be different from when I first met them in the preceding books. Everything You Want Me To Be by Mindy Mejia was a fantastic read as well. I’ve already reviewed The Chemist by Stephenie Meyer and Born A Crime previously so you know how I felt about them. Little Heaven was on the blog last week.

Have you read any of these books? Let me know what you’ve been up to lately. 🙂 Have a great week, dear readers. I know it’s not going to be the greatest, but I hope you’ll make the best of it, anyway.

  • Hugs. <3 Best of luck with reading lately sweetie 😀 I haven't read any of these, but they do look pretty awesome ;p I have read 5 books this month, but wishing I had read more, but yeah, I lost the will to read because of all the drama that happened :p hoping to get past it soon 🙂 Lovely post Joy. <3 Hope you are doing the best.

  • Sara Walker

Six in one week- I am happy if I get six in one month. I love that you are able to get so much read sometimes. I am really eager to read Born a Crime- I actually want to listen to the audio book.

Good luck with all your reading!

  • Woah, you’ve read so many books this week Joy that is amazing! Thanks for the reviews, definitely some interesting books I’ve never heard of!

  • Keertana @ Ivy Book Bindings

I haven’t read any of these but I want to read a bunch of them! I’ve been having a tough week adjusting to my new life in Budapest, which sounds so first-world and privileged but it hasn’t been an easy transition. Hopefully with some more time I’ll feel more at home here. Hope you’re having a great week, Joy!

  • Dena

I’ll be avoiding social media too. It’s a battlefield out there!

I haven’t read any of these books, but I’ve seen Everything You Want Me to Be around the internet and it sounds pretty good. Did you like it?

  • I requested that my library buy the audiobook of Little Heaven. I can’t wait to try it. I still need to listen to Born a Crime. I have it on audio, just need to fit it into my schedule.

  • What Netgalley thing?!! OMG I need to do that! My percentage is good but still! I liked Everything You Want Me to be, but I had just read The Girl Before by J.P. Delaney and that was a brilliant read so anything else faded away haha

The dreaded inauguration… that about says it all. I too am hoping to avoid social media that afternoon. And as for Netgalley I’ve never requested an ARC but I’ve been reconsidering that of late- so I’ll have to poke around there. 🙂

Everything You Want Me To Be looks good, I’ve been looking reviews of that. and werewolf stories can grab me, although I don’t like really gory stuff. The Queen books by Sarah fine have kinda cught my eye also.

  • RO

Lots going on for sure! Hope all is well, and that you’re getting some reading in! Back to suspense, as I also handle a move to a new place. Ughhhh…(lol)Hugs…

  • I haven’t read any of these. I do need to go to Net Galley to see what you are talking about. I only get maybe one a month if that from them so my percentage is good. I hate feeling like I am pressured to do them. In the beginning I went a bit crazy but now I am much better. I plan on being very far away from my tv on Friday. My sister said she will be watching to see what happens with all the crowds that will be fighting outside of it. I said if something happens I am sure they will replay it on the news. I refuse to watch him!

    • I think I’ve requested 8 in one go last week, so I’m feelin’ the heat. Lol.

  • I haven’t read any of the books you mentioned in this post but I want to read a few of them. I’ve been hearing good things about the Trevor Noah book and I’m curious about The Chemist so we’ll see which ones I actually get around to reading. Hopefully, at least one.

Great reading week for you, Joy. Keep up the good work!

    • Trevor Noah’s book was free on audible. I don’t know if it is still. You should check it out. 🙂

  • I’m not sure what I will be doing – other than working. >.<

    Have a good week!

  • Jazmen

I’m just here for the pics. Lol. I’m kidding. I just love the way you take pics, capturing the light and all that! But, I won’t be watching the inauguration either. I will pass on the foolishness. I hear some people are having voluntary lobotomies that day if you wanna join? LOL. I may have scheduled myself. But really, I say let’s just read to forget, or rather ignore in this case.

    • Lol. Thanks, Jaz. Hahaha! I saw some pretty kick ass comments on Mike Pence’s plea for anyone wanting to attend this abomina–I mean, inauguration. That was pretty awesome. 🙂

      • Jazmen

I seen the Donald Trump plea and the comments on there gave me my laugh for the day!

        • Right? OMG. I saw it late last night and so I was laughing all by myself.

  • Ugh, I can say that I WON’T be watching. I don’t want to give him any ratings whatsoever. Happy reading, Joy!

  • I just adore your reading prowess! You should have a webinar on good reading habits lol. I’ve put my book blogging on hold (sort of, I’m only reading self-help, self-care, inspirational books) and I started a new self-care focused blog. And since I’m on my self-care ish, I definitely cannot be a part of the mess that’s about to happen in a few days. It just makes me sad just thinking about it. Ignoring it for the next few days, I probably can get away with it. But the next few years…..ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I don’t know hun, just read and be on your blog. I think I’m going to go catch a matinee by myself, and treat myself out to lunch, maybe go thrifting. Tire myself out, drink a couple glasses of pinot grigio, and go to sleep.

    • Aw. Thanks, girl. I’ll see you when you get back. Take care, love.

  • RO

I just finished up an old Nora Roberts novel called the Villa from 2001, that was really good, and trying to catch up on everything else. I always recommend chocolate and a good book to fix just about anything!(lol) Hugs…

    • Ohhh I have that book. I started it a while back but distractions. Need to pick it back up again!

  • I’m curious about Wait For It! I’ve really enjoyed a few books by that author.

    • It’s good but not as good as the first book. I didn’t quite enjoy the second one, so…

  • I am trying so hard to stay away from NetGalley but it calls to me. I have like a hundred books that I still need to read from there. I have issues. You got a lot of reading in this week – I’m impressed. I really need to read The Dark Days Club.

    • I have 40 books that are older than 3 months. WHELP.

  • For the 20th… Read. Netflix. Craft. Anything but turn on the tv. I don’t want to even accidentally give him any ratings so even if I go on social media… it will be like inauguration? What inauguration? I thought President Snow was already the leader… :p

    • Yep. Fuck him. I won’t give him the satisfaction either. I wish we have a march here. I would have gone, for sure.

  • What’s the deal with NetGalley? I tried to log on, but I didn’t see any info about it. My score is actually fine (I have an 80%), but I’d love to do a little purge of some of the really old books I requested when I first joined NetGalley.

    • Go to Your Shelf where it lists all your current titles. Beside the Current Titles tab is an Older Than 3 Months Ago tab. You can see all the books you’ve not sent a feedback from there. 🙂

  • If I ever get back into book reviewing and want to use NetGalley again.. I fear for my sanity in regards to my score. *shudder*

    • Haha! I don’t blame you. For the last few years, I’ve been very good at requesting only 1 or 2 per month. I don’t know why I’m developing a bad habit. *cries*

  • Ugh that thing that is coming up

  • shootingstarsmag

Oh gosh, I refuse to watch the inauguration. I’m not sure what I’ll do instead. Probably blog/read or just watch something else on TV. I hope this week goes by quick in general though.

    • Same. I tried to see if there was a march in my city but apparently not. I think I’ll go ahead and make a donation to Planned Parenthood.

  • I plan to stick headphones in my ears and listen to an audiobook while I paint my kitchen cabinets on Friday. Sound like fun? It’ll be much more pleasant than seeing the Orange Beast plastered all over my internet and tv 🙁 I’ll have to checkout Netgalley to see what they’re doing but I Must Not Request 😉

    • That sounds like a ton of fun, actually. Heck, getting a root canal sounds like a better idea, to be honest. Lol.

  • I just ran to your review on The Chemist because I’ve been interested in that book. I also LOVED The Host. Unfortunately, I’ve seen very similar negative reviews for The Chemist and I’m really bummed. Looks like I’ll be skipping that one.

    • It’s disappointing, really. It lacks the sappiness of Twilight. Lol. Hey, look at that. Apparently, I need sappiness in my life.

  • Karen

Is that why Netgalley is bringing back older books? I was so annoyed because I had shelved them years ago. There weren’t many but…I did end up reviewing them just to get them out of the way.

I stock up on cheesy movies (hallmark type movies) and binge when I need to avoid reality.

My kitchen remodel should be done Thursday after my new counters are installed so maybe I’ll spend the day Friday cooking. Doubt it but I can pretend I’m a chef! lol

    Karen @For What It’s Worth

    • Can’t wait to see pictures of your new kitchen, Karen. I love home reno reveals!

  • Darn that Netgalley huh? Always tempting me! I was very tempted to request the M O’Keefe book, but I resisted because I hated the previous book. Do you think I’d like it?
As for inauguration day, I plan to do the same. Then, the next day I’m considering going to the Women’s March in Philadelphia. I’m not a big crowds person, but I’m going to try to make an effort.
Have a good week ahead, Joy!

    • It’s not as angst ridden as the first two books, for sure. I was expecting a good angst, but I was equal parts relieved and somewhat let down. Lol. Fickle reader is fickle.

  • kindlemom1

I didn’t know that about Netgalley, I’ll have to check it out. Good luck with all of your reading!

    • Thanks, Ali! Oh, I’m sure your stats are fantastic. But yeah, I just found that out the other day. Good God, I can’t believe I have 40 unread books in there!

  • This is my last week of working for the same company for the past 19 years. That’ll be enough for me to focus on and keep me distracted from everything else. 🙂
I need to read Everything You Want Me To Be soon. All the hype has me curious.
My Netgalley rating is crap. I forget to add my reviews all the time. I tried doing some catch up on it last week, but I don’t think I’ll ever get my rating up. And I need to stop requesting books!!

    • Oh, wow. You’re a lifer. I’m sure you’re going to a better place, so I wish you the best of luck, Brandie! And I think you will enjoy Everything You Want Me To Be.

      Have a great week!

  • ChristinaBookAddict

Blah. I can’t even think about the inauguration. I am so upset. I just can’t believe it’s actually happening. I thought by now something would have happened to stop this. I look forward to your thoughts on The Dark Days Pact. I thought book one was pretty fun! Have a great week!

    • SAMEEEE. I just need to huddle in my bedroom and not think about the coming days. I can’t believe the next President is that buffoon. Ugh.

  • Happy reading and have a nice week!

    • Thanks, Melliane! Are you having a good break? I haven’t seen you on my Bloglovin’ feed lately.

  • *sees The Dark Days Pact on photo* Have you started with the Dark Days Pact? I was reading The Dark Days Club last month but decided to put it down. I was think if the sequel is good I’ll pick it up immediately, if not (or if it’s not for me), I’ll hold it off until I feel like reading it again.
Hope you have a great week ahead, Joy 🙂

    • Not yet. Really hoping I’ll have a better luck with that one than I did with the first book. The first one was a snoozer for me. :/

      • well that’s comforting to know that I wasn’t the only one who felt that way. I was so excited to read it because almost everyone said it was action-packed. oh well…

        • The characters are pretty cold, too. So that contributed to the snooze factor.
