On the Night Table [43]: January Books

The Cursed Queen by Sarah Fine | Little Heaven by Nick Cutter | The Dark Days Pact by Alison Goodman | Everything You Want Me To Be by Mindy Mejia

I just realized that I really don’t have too many books for reviews on my pile anymore. So this month, I’m going to try to not get distracted so I can finally get rid of the books for which I have to write a review. Admittedly, I’ve already fallen behind because I see a couple that came out yesterday (Everything You Want Me to Be & The Cursed Queen). This is so frustrating to me as this mishap could’ve easily been avoided had I know how to keep a better handle on what’s due.

Anyway, I’m also supposed to be a part of the blog tour for Little Heaven this month but I’ve yet to see a confirmation of my participation date. I’m in the middle of Everything You Want Me to Be that I’m thoroughly enjoying. I’m a little close to halfway so I’m at the point where the meat of the plot is slowly unraveling. I aim to finish reading this book tomorrow so I can put up a review. I might just pull an all-nighter for this.

ย In my quest to at least appear like I got my shit together, I started a journal for my blog. I did this last year as well but I didn’t continue. This year, I’m hoping that I’ll be able to keep it going for the entire year. It’s not the most creative but I’m at least trying to get organized. Lol.

What are you reading? Have you read any of these?

  • Yay for blog journal ๐Ÿ˜€ That sounds pretty awesome. <3 Best of luck sweetie ๐Ÿ™‚ And gah. The Dark Days Pact. <3 So jealous. I hope you love it ๐Ÿ˜€ Happy reading Joy. <3

  • I read Everything You Want Me to Be and really enjoyed it! The ending was bleh for me and I was expecting more from the book, but it was still a great read overall ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I’m trying to be like you and not have so many review books! I don’t mind ones for things I’m really anticipating, but I’ve found so many books that fell by the wayside because I didn’t have the enthusiasm by the time they came out that I never read them.

I try to be organized as well, though I admit it’s in spurts. I find keeping an Excel spreadsheet of review copies helps me most. I keep a list of review copies that have already released that I still need to read and review, as well as one of books that are upcoming–in an effort to balance between older books and new ones. It works…some of the time. Good luck, Joy!

  • Oooh I see a peek of your journal, I hope it helps! I have no books on my January radar because I have no idea whats out or what I want to read. I kind of just want to reread books or…not read fora bit. Happy 2017!

  • It’s hard to stay on top of review books and I keep requesting. Then I just want to read something random. *sigh* I have been better about requesting, though. I’ve cut back and I try and do audio version for non ARC books. That helps with my time.

I have a printed calendar page for each month with a list of books on the back that are due for the month. I write the publication date and archive date on it and then I write in the date spots when I’m scheduled to review. So that’s even less creative than a blog journal! Here’s hoping we both stay focused and organized! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Great Post I Bullet Journal, but similarly started tracking and planning on my blog in it but didn’t continue. Hopefully this year will be a much better year for that!!! Everything you want me to be looks Amazing, so I hope it lives up to the hype!!

  • I started a Blog/Social Media planner for myself with lots of bujo pages inserted into it. I love it and I love how accomplished I feel when I get stuff done. You can do this, Joy! You take gorgeous pictures. I’m so jealous!!

Good luck and Happy New Year!

  • I do like keeping a journal with my blog tracking. It just helps keep everything so much more organized.

  • great post! I’m definitely trying to be more organized this year. I don’t have a journal for blogging though, that sounds like a wonderful idea.

  • I bought that many dated, fancy journals last year Joy and they all sat unused and expired. This year I just bought a cute little Typo diary to write down dates, books etc, nothing fancy and hoping I’ll keep at it.

We’ll reconvene next month to trade notes ๐Ÿ˜€

  • I love the idea of a blog journal! I may have to try that. Cursed Queen looks good!

  • Sara Walker

I have a blog journal. I use it in waves. But I am a major list maker- I make so many lists. When I get a physical ARC I tend to write the pub date on the inside and also write it on my wall calendar (I also get a little anal and write it in my agenda). I still miss the buck sometimes though. No one’s perfect. Good luck with this month’s goals, Joy!

I don’t have TOO many review books, though I’m a bit behind on a couple. haha It happens, and the start of the year is just really hectic. Good luck with the blog journal!!

I have many planners that I’ve started, journals and what not. I have yet to stay dedicated to it. I am going to try. Good luck with yours!

  • RO

That journal looks fun! Another blogger recommended that I start a Planner and it’s been working pretty well. The reason it’s been helping is because I’ve been caught up with putting stickers and using all these colored pens. Somehow, they’ve been keeping me motivated with the Blog and life in general. Dang, your nightstand looks pretty orderly! Hugs…

  • I’m so thrilled to have fewer review books, which means I have more time to read other things I’m interested in. Have not read anything on your stack, so I’m excited to hear your thoughts!
    Happy New Year!

  • I enjoyed Everything You Want Me to Be and have Little Heaven coming up this month as well. I love the idea of a journal but know myself well enough to know that I would get it set up and then forget about it. I use Goodreads to keep track of all of my bookish stuff and sometimes make notes there about when things are due.

  • kindlemom1

Good luck with your journal keeping and all your reading! I definitely have to have a journal of sorts to keep in track of all my ARCs but other than that, I really don’t use one. I know I should but, yeah, I suck. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • I have a shelf on Goodreads called To Review and then I just sort that shelf by Pub date. That way I always know what dates are coming up. Lately that hasn’t been good enough though, so I’ve also added reviews to my calendar, even if they’re not scheduled (for a tour). On the one hand, I’m worried that might ruin my spontaneity a little, but with so many books from BEA, I had to get better about tracking. We shall see!

  • Good luck in jan!

  • I have these on my list and I hope to readthem soon.

  • ChristinaBookAddict

I look forward to your thoughts on The Dark Days Pact. Good luck with getting organized! I feel like I could use that in all areas of my life.

  • I have been wanting to read Everything You Want Me To Be. It’s getting a lot of attention now. I hope it’s good!

  • Good luck for everything!

  • Oh man every time I start journalling about books I end up giving it up and just going with Goodreads hahaha. Happy new year Joy!

  • I hope the journaling works out for you and that you can stay organised! This year I am trying to request less books for review that will have a time limit on when I need to review them. So basically blog tours xD I have four more tours to go and then I’m done all of mine ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • I have heard a lot of good things about Everything You Want Me to Be, so I hope you love it! I love your planner, I am trying to be more organized this year too… I procrastinate sooo much!

  • I’ve been eyeing Everything You Want Me to Be.. Definitely can’t wait for your review, Joy ๐Ÿ™‚
I also started bullet journaling. I kind of ditched using a planner for this — it’s basically a mixture of to-do lists and books and blogging.
