Weekend Readathon

This past weekend, I unofficially participated in a readathon of sorts. I was seeing posts on Twitter about it and I thought it’s a great way to see how many books I can cram in a 24-hour period. I originally planned on reading four books, but sleep and another book got in the way.

I did well, I thought.

Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland [ 3 out of 5 Stars]
Alex + Ada by Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn [4 out of 5 Stars]
Twisted Palace by Erin Watt [2 out of 5 Stars]

Hag-seed by Margaret Atwood
Eight Hundred Grapes by Laura Dave

I had a productive time while participating. It gave me the opportunity to write a review soon after reading the book. My thoughts were fresh and writing down my thoughts came so easily.

I didn’t do much of anything this weekend but this. I wanted to go to the bookstore to pick up a copy of Gemina (which came out last week) but I decided to save it since I haven’t even read Illuminae yet. I wasn’t able to visit your blogs but rest assured that I will be doing that this week.

I hope your weekend was just as productive.

Happy reading!

  • Four books in 24 hours is awesome! I’m lucky to get through one, with the craziness of family! lol

  • Whoo 😀 Yay for getting to read so many books in such a little time, hih. <3 You are amazing Joy 🙂 They do look like pretty awesome books. Gosh, sorry for being so behind on commenting.. hugs. <3 (But hah, on posts I don't get on email, I'm a whole month behind :p Slowly catching up. <3)

I love this!! Read-a-thons are my thing, these days. I love coming up with the TBR, and the sitting down and binge reading. So much fun. I am impressed you got three books read in such a short amount of time. I’d like to try this some time.

  • I’ve always wanted to participate in a 24 hour readathon, but the timing is always horrible! And of course, sleep gets in the way as well (and I would say that yes you were super productive!)

Glad to see that you liked all the books you read! I liked Our Chemical Hearts, and I really want to pick up Alex + Ada at some point!

    • Oh, I know. To be fair, I didn’t stay up all night to read so I didn’t really follow most of the rules. Hahaha.

  • Jazmen

I keep telling myself that I’m going to spend a weekend reading. Yeah right. It has yet to happen. At least you got through three books. Now to read these reviews!

    • Ah. I tried to recreate my weekend readathon this past weekend and couldn’t. Sigh.

  • Good job! I’m strangely fascinated with the cover of Our Chemical Hearts. It’s just so strange.

    • Yes. It took a while before the significance of the fish sink in, but can’t say it was the perfect cover. Lol. Love the predominantly whiteness of it, though.

I’m always finding out about the 24 hour readathon last minute. I didn’t really have time to read this weekend, sadly. That’s great you got a few books in though! I’m really trying to read as much as I can this week as I want to finish up Blog Ahead a bit more ahead.

    • Same here. I tend to stay away from them because I’m usually busy, but this weekend, I made a promise to stay at home so I was able to participate.

  • When I was younger I might have done a readathon but I just don’t think I could now. One book probably-maybe two. So I am impressed that you were able to read all these. Glad you had a good time!

    • Thanks, Lorna. Surprisingly, I didn’t put that much pressure on myself even though I picked an ambitious amount of books to read. 😉 i just took my time.

  • Oh I am so happy that you were able to do so much for the read a thon. Good job

    • Thank you. I learned that it’s possible if I set my mind to it. 🙂

  • Jasprit

Well done Joy on all the reading you managed to cram in, I so need a weekend or a day even where I do nothing but read, and I love it when I’m able to write a review straight after finishing a book, I know the longer that I put it off, the least likely I am going to write one!

    • Yes. That’s all we need! I wish all my weekends were spent in my bedroom. Lol.

  • Wohoo readathon

  • I hope you enjoy Illuminae as much as I did. I need to get Gemina now. 🙂

Looks like you did well on the readathon! Way to go! Glad you felt productive. I need to feel that way soon. 🙂

    • I’m so intimidated by it, to be honest. It’s huge and the content even more so.

      Thanks, Melissa!

  • I really wish I could read books at a faster rate. I consider myself a slow reader lol. I can read two or three, but it would take me about 2 weeks to finish them all. Congrats on getting that TBR list down!!

    • I was the same, Chantale. It takes practice and years of devotion to reading. 😉 Thanks! Let’s hope I’ll be able to stay away from the bookstores this week. Lol.

  • I love it when you can do a readathon or even a personal challenge like this! I really can’t wait to see how you feel about Hag-seed by Margaret Atwood as I’m so curious! Glad you had an enjoyable reading weekend 🙂

    • It’s interesting so far, Kim. I hope you’ll get the chance to read it. Are you a fan of Shakespeare?

  • I’m glad you’ve been able to participate in the read-a-thon and get some reading done! I’m on a week of holiday and have challenged myself to try and read one book a day for the next nine days. We’ll see how it goes. But it’s always nice and good to be able to jot down a review while the thoughts are still fresh in your mind. You go girl <3

    • Jealous! A week of reading sounds heavenly. Sigh.

  • I really loved the entire Alex and Ada Series, and I;m really looking forward to reading Hagseed. I didn’t participate in the readathon, but similarly tried to step my reading game up this weekend! Tori @ In Tori Lex

    • I so wish I have Volume 2 in my grabby little hands right now! I have to scour the city for a copy because my regular bookstore only has Volume 3. Bah.

  • I’m so glad you participated!! 3 books is awesome – I managed 1 & 1/2, but it was a fun day!

  • ChristinaBookAddict

I have never done a readathon and would love to participate once my boys are older…sounds like a great way to spend a Saturday. I’m glad you had a productive one!

    • Oh yes. Lol. it’s definitely tougher with young kiddies around. 🙂

  • I haven’t done a readathon in a long time! I see you read and didn’t like Twisted Palace. I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on that one!
Glad you were able to get some reading done, Joy! 🙂

    • Ugh. You were right, Nick! It was horrible. 🙁

  • kindlemom1

Three books is great! I haven’t read Illuminae yet either but I plan too, especially since reviews are already coming in for Gemina and they are just as good as they were for the first, which I love seeing.

    • Right? I’m so jealous of everyone who’s had the chance to read both!

  • Illuminae didn’t do it for me, so Gemina is not on my tbr this time.. hope you like the series more than I do

    • Oh, that’s too bad. I feel like it’s going to be confusing because there’s so much going on within its pages. Bah.

  • Keertana @ Ivy Book Bindings

Ooh, I can’t wait for your review of Twisted Palace because I also felt like it was the weakest book in the series. But amazing work on flying through so many books this weekend, Joy!! Looking forward to your thoughts on these!

    • I was so annoyed, to be honest! And the ending didn’t really make up for it. :/

  • Great! I didn’t know about these books but the covers are eye-catching
