new-4 new-3 new-2 new-1

This past weekend, we had a book club meeting (sort of). No one read the book we picked aside from two people (oh, the humanity!). Yep. Our book club is off to a fantastic start. Lol. I’m there to meet up with other people who share the same interest as I, anyway so I don’t really care. The best part of going to the meeting is the venue (it’s at a bookstore, naturally). So I usually end up coming home with a bunch of books.

I was so ecstatic to see Holding Up the Universe so early! So I picked it up along with Crooked Kingdom. But I was disappointed to see that a couple of the books that were released last week was not on their shelves so I went to another location the next day. Lo and behold, I found a copy of Replica and Aerie several days before their release days!

I know authors hate it when we buy books ahead of the release day because it doesn’t count towards the sale for the week. Some authors don’t really care but I remember someone (not naming names) who gave a stink about not making the best seller list because her book was released ahead of time. Whatever. I bought your book. You’ll get the money eventually so staph. Anywho. What about you?

Do you get as excited as I am when you see a book out before its release date?

  • Other than on Net Galley or an author request I don’t ever see books out before they should be. At least not that I have noticed. I love the idea of a book club. I was in one for a short while until it fell apart. We read a book I never would have read and it actually was good! I hope it works out for you πŸ™‚

  • Jazmen

Quite a few of these are on my radar, hope to check out quite a few of these!

  • The ones I have for review are Replica, Golden Hand, Something in Between and Holding Up the Universe which I’ve read. I feel like I’m finally catching up! Looking forward to hearing more thoughts on When the Moon was Ours as well. I can’t wait to read Magnus Chase but I can’t fit it in atm!

  • RO

I don’t think that’s ever happened to me with a novel, so that’s interesting. I see the great Nicholas Sparks has a new one! Yay!

  • Lot’s of great reads there Joy! I liked Bedmates, but I want to know more about Four Letter Word! I hope you liked that one.
Better luck with the book club meeting next time!

  • karina

hahaha, what did your book club choose to read? πŸ™‚

  • I hope you laughed like a maniac and launched the book at her head Joy. That annoys me. We’re readers and not here to coddle authors. We support their writing through purchasing books which in turn helps and encourages them to continue to write. If books are being released early, take it up with your damn publisher and bookstores.

I really enjoyed Holding Up The Universe but so excited for Aerie. I’m waiting for my copy to arrive. How many are in your bookclub? Sounds like most of them are just there for the socialising πŸ˜€

  • A book club meetings at a
bookstore is a sure way to unplanned purchases, Joy. I actually didn’t know that
when the readers buy books ahead of the release day, it doesn’t count towards
    the sale for the week.

  • Lovely post sweetie. <3 Yay for sharing about books that are out πŸ˜€ And aw. If I lived in the US, I would totally buy books if they came out early, haha :p I love it the most when my pre-orders from bookdepo arrives before release date πŸ™‚

  • So weird that the bookstores put books on the shelves before release. I guess I can kind of see how that would be frustrating for an author if it affects their release week sales, but I don’t see why an author would be upset with FANS about that.

  • Authors can be so mecurial sometimes….you never know what will make them happy or not. But if I see a book on the shelf available, I will buy it if I want it. There were some great releases this week though.

  • Hahaha. I have to admit that, while I’d probably have read the book, any book club I’m in would be more social than anything. πŸ™‚

I’m actually surprised you found Holding Up the Universe! It was strict on sale for us in the US, so if it was the same in Canada, your bookstore could actually get in trouble with the publisher. I dunno how it works up there, though.

In terms of putting books out early, as the person who puts out 99% of the teen books at my store, it’s probably going to be out early or it’s going to be out late–which would everyone prefer? I’m so busy that the books get put out when I get there. If a book that’s out Tuesday is on my cart on Friday, imma put it out, because I’m not going to be working that cart again anytime too soon.

But now I’m curious about who made a stink!

  • Sara Walker

So many books. Goodness- I want to read them all! I am super curious about Replica, but I am unsure about Lauren Oliver, I am also SUPER excited for Beautiful, I have loved both of their series. And of course, Jennifer Niven’s book is a must read for me. I absolutely must get my hands on it.

  • 5 of these are on my must-have list, so I am hoping to get them for my birthday this month. I really want to read Holding Up the Universe first, though!

  • I agree that author’s shouldn’t expect anger towards their fans who have no control of how things are tallied. I hope replica’s good and I’m waiting to see some reviews before I decide to buy and read.

  • I see that Ashes is part of a series! I want those three books! And I’m even willing to pay full price lol. Hopefully, I can find all of them at Barnes & Noble.

  • I’m thinking the author’s have to take their frustration out on the publishers and list makers and NOT the consumers. How dumb is that?

At least you got some good books! πŸ˜€ Hopefully more people will read the next book so you also get some good discussion.

  • Seriously? They kicked up a stink for that? Psh… I’d be thrilled if people bought my book – before the release date or not!
So many great books here! Very excited for Holding Up the Universe and Magnus Chase.
Bookstores are the worst enablers! Hope your bookclub meeting was still enjoyable even if noone had read the book!

  • Hahahaha Joy I feel you. I buy books from Amazon mostly, unless I happen to be at the store at the time of the release, so I don’t run into this problem. Though I did see one book before its release date in Barnes & Noble. I honestly don’t think 1 or 2 people buying the book ahead of time will make a difference hahah.

I’m really excited for Holding Up The Universe, Goldenhand, This Adventure Ends, and When The Moon Was Ours! (Which are still sitting in their boxes, unopened, whoops!)

  • I’m currently reading Four Letter Word. Liking it so far!

  • shootingstarsmag

I don’t think I’ve seen a book out before release date. I can see why authors might be upset, but yeah, it’s one of those things you just kind of have to let go. Publicly complaining won’t garner as much sympathy as just asking if people can wait or something. Sorry people didn’t really read the book club book, but hanging out with book lovers is still great!

  • I got a book today and was all woot! And yes ahead of release date by 6 months, pre orders are cheaper

  • LOL, nobody read your book club book? That would drive me crazy. I kicked my sisters and my best friend out of my book club because they never read the books. They keep asking if they can just come and chat with us after book club and I won’t let them. I’m so mean. It’s book club, not social hour!

I’ve got a bunch of these books on my TBB list. I’m super excited about This Adventure Ends by Emma Mills though.

  • I need Holding Up the Universe and The Black Key! I’ve been requested for the two previous books by Amy Ewing so I was surprised I wasn’t for TBK. I was so sad πŸ™
All the Bright the Places was a book I really enjoyed and deeply impacted me. I cried like a baby in one part and then cried when I met the author lol So I’ve been looking forward to her new book. I hope I get it for Christmas or something.

  • Ooh I want to read Everyone We’ve Been – it sounds so good!

  • LOL. Being in SA, books are never out early here ;P

I’m so looking forward to Aerie, the new Emma Mills, and When the Moon was Ours!

  • Already have a couple of them >.< cannot wait

  • I hope you’re still enjoying your book club meeting even though only two read the book! Holding Up the Universe is one I am so excited to read after having loved All the Bright Places. I’m still waiting on the movie of that!

  • kindlemom1

Thanks for sharing these Joy, lots of great books out!

  • Jenny @ Supernatural Snark

I loved Holding Up the Universe Joy! I can’t wait to see what you think of that one:) I have The Lovely Reckless on my list for next week, I hoping it’s a winner as well.

And I had no idea sales from early purchases don’t count for the week. That’s odd. I wonder why that is.

  • WOAH! A pretty intense release week! I’m really excited for Holding Up The Universe, The Black Key, and The Lovely Reckless. Your book club sounds like a whole lot of fun! And yeah I had heard about books releasing early and not counting towards first week sales. Oh well. Honestly, I don’t really care whether an author makes the NYT or not. If I get a book early that I’ve been dying to read, then I’m buying it!

  • I was so excited that Beautiful and The Trespasser were on my Kindle this morning! I need to buy This Adventure Ends, but my bank account is weeping right now. Lol.

  • ChristinaBookAddict

I have an ARC of Something in Between and This Adventure Ends…hoping to check them out this month. I also didn’t know that tidbit about sales. Interesting!

  • I didn’t know that about the sells. How weird.

  • I’m super excited for Holding Up the Universe and Everyone We’ve Been! πŸ˜€
I’ve only seen a book before its release date once and I got so excited! It made me feel special (even though I know everyone in the area gets it ahead of the release date too, haha).
