On the Night Table [39]: Reading Updates

Jonathan Unleashed by Meg Rosoff | Curious Minds by Janet Evanovich | A Song of Fire and Ice by George RR Martin | The Sunlight Pilgrims by Jenni Fagan

Β Hello.

How was your weekend? This is kind of random but I don’t know if I’ve mentioned how much I wanted to have another baby. My husband is totally against this idea, though citing his age (he’s 44) and that he’s an old man who can no longer do the sleepless nights and the sport of chasing a toddler around. Every time I am around babies, I melt. So on Saturday, I was so happy when I got to babysit my cousin’s baby while they attended a wedding. She’s six months old, very sweet and very beautiful. She was such a good baby, though. She only cried when she was tired. Other than that, the kids adored her.

Yesterday, I basically sat around and tried not to think about the coming work week. Not that it’s going to be a crazy maelstrom of pushing paper, it’s just it’s been slow lately so I’m bored most of the time. What about you? What did you get up to this weekend?

I don’t know why I do this to myself. I literally started all these books this weekend except for The Sunlight Pilgrims. In my defense, this is what happens when you live in a place where a book is within your reach in any random rooms of the house. And even worst when a book is so good that you’re unable to put it down after a couple of chapters. So yes. This week, I found myself reading four books all at the same time.

Aug 7

The Sunlight Pilgrims is going really slow for me. It’s really weird because this novel is about the coming ice age, and for some reason, I’m not sensing any urgency and alarm from the characters of this book. This is really unfortunate because I was really excited for this. I’m close to halfway; the snow just started falling. Let’s hope the white stuff will light a fire on the story’s slow as a sludge plot line. I’m on page 103 of 272.

Jonathan Unleashed is a weird one. It’s a contemporary fiction about this man who found himself saddled with a couple of dogs. These dogs are currently showing him facets of his relationship that he may have been in denial all these time. It’s interesting, sure. But I’m a little put off with his state of mind. There’s a telling immaturity about him that makes him seem lazy. We’ll see how it goes. I’m on page 64 of 275 of an ARC.

Curious Minds is my baptism of fire into the world of Janet Evanovich. This is a brand new series – which I’m so happy about. I’ve always wanted to read her books but I don’t have the time to invest and read the backlist of her number of series. I can’t believe I haven’t read any of her books! After flipping through this novel, I found myself unable to look away. I’m in danger of yet another sleepless night, folks. This one’s about an eccentric billionaire and an analyst from a finance company who find themselves in cahoots to solve the disappearance of a financier. I’m really into this. I’m on page 48 of 323 of an ARC.

A Song of Fire and Ice has always been on my bucket list. I’m happy that I finally got around to picking this up. I decided to read this with the help of an audiobook because my ginormous copy is the size of a textbook. I’m loving it. I saw the first 6 episodes of the tv series, so most of the stuff I’m reading rings a bell. I can’t wait to get into it further; I’m on page 117 of 674.

So that’s what I’m reading this week, folks. I hope you’ll have a lovely week.

Happy reading!

  • Aw πŸ™‚ I do hope that you guys will decide to have another child. <3 Hugs. But yeah.. I could never ever have children, lol. And I'm happy with that πŸ™‚ But anyway. Yay for reading lots of awesome books πŸ™‚ Hope you ended up loving them all. <3

  • I want to read the Game of Thrones series… One day I will make the time! I hope you enjoy them all!

  • YAS A GAME OF THRONES YAS YAS YASSS. I’m so glad you’re enjoying it a lot as well! Have all the fun reading it and I can’t wait to see what you think when you’re finished. And I feel the same – I love babies so much <3

  • Oooh, I totally want to start Game of Thrones. I love the TV series, and the books I’m sure are even better. Need to get to that soon! Happy reading πŸ˜€

  • I am definitely in the don’t want any more babies camp. I am with your husband and feel too old to do it anymore. My sister is only 3 years younger than me with 2 year old twins so I am probably not really too old…but I feel like I am.

I have Jonathan Unleashed on my TBR pile. Can’t wait to get to it. I am curious about the Evanovich book but I am a bit burned out by her anymore. I will wait for some reviews to show up.

  • I love babies buuuuuut not ready to have any yet lol
What a list!!! Good luck reading those. I will be adding a few to my TBR list πŸ™‚

    • A huge life event so yes. You have to be ready for one financially, mentally, and emotionally. πŸ™‚

Thanks, Jenn! I hope you’ll enjoy.

  • I feel you about the babies. I used to work in a baby lab during my undergraduate years and I just loved seeing all the babies come in with their families. And sure, it’s probably super stressful and time consuming to take care of one, but they’re just so darn cute!

The Sunlight PIlgrims sounds pretty intriguing! Though I’m also surprised that no one is panicking about the upcoming ice age ahaha. I haven’t heard of any of these books other than A Song of Ice & Fire of course, which I don’t know when I’ll get to. It is very intimidating.

    • I just picked up book 3 yesterday. It’s even bigger than the other two books. Lol. This is going to take me an entire year.

  • Jazmen

I did not know Janet had a new series, it’s about damn time. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it’s good.

    • Yep. Which is good because I don’t have to catch up. Lol.

  • I rarely manage to put down a new book once I have started (unless I choose to DNF). Good luck finishing them all.

  • It Looks like you have read some good ones. I have been wanting to pick up Game of Thrones though. Hope you enjoy reading the rest of it πŸ™‚

  • Evanovitch is definitely addictive! I’ve read her Stephanie Plum books on and off for years, and while they definitely annoyed me (that damn love triangle just wouldn’t die), I always breezed through them and they’re so fun. I’ve read a few of her others with the same results. I’ll have to check that one out!

    • Ew. Thanks for telling me about that love triangle. Not a fan. Will not put myself through that. Lol.

  • Awww <3 I wish you could have your baby. Or maybe get a cute little puppy?
You just reminded me that I have to watch the new Ice Age movie!!
Oh and my weekend was okay. Like every day, honestly, since I'm in summer break… for 2 more weeks only :/

    • I also asked him about a puppy. He was not sold on the idea either. Boo.

  • I have very young siblings, so I avoid baby time, haha. I’m so impressed that you are reading A Game of Thrones! I own it but have been too intimidated to start it. I also don’t feel like it is MY kind of fantasy. I’m glad you are loving it so far though :).

    • Weird, huh? Hard to believe that this is the kind of fantasy I can get behind. Lol.

  • Aww babies are adorable! πŸ™‚ I wish my mom had more kids as I’ve always wanted a little sibling! I have an older brother which is awesome but he’s 14 years older than me so he doesn’t live with us and I feel like an only child XD

The books you’re reading look really good! I’d quite like to read Game of Thrones but I’ve heard they’re quite violent and I’m not a fan of violent books/movies! πŸ™‚

    • Oh, that’s quite a difference in age! Were you a “surprise baby”? As for GoT, well, so far, the tv series is more violent, I think. I’m loving it so far.

  • Aw… hope you get more baby time. She sounds so sweet!

Hm.. I’m unsure about Jonathan Unleashed. I always worry about the dogs and I have a feeling I won’t like the way he treats them at first. I still haven’t read a Janet Evanovich book and now you have made me want to read at least one. I have a feeling she will be a potato chip author. Can’t read just one!

    • He’s actually pretty sweet on the dogs. I think he’ll boot the GF first before he gets rid of the dogs. Lol.

  • I do get it, 44 and a new baby, but maybe he will change his mind when he sees you melt πŸ˜‰

  • shootingstarsmag

Aw, glad you got some baby time in this past weekend! I have a new niece but I won’t see her until December as they live quite far away from me. I’m excited to get some baby snuggling in in the future though!

Sometimes I find myself reading around three books at the same time – I don’t tend to do more than that, but it happens!

    • They have the sweetest smell! I love when they leave their smell on you. Lol.

  • I’ve done nothing but read and watch the Olympics over the weekend. This work week for me will be crazy since there are lots of ppl coming in to visit from Korea and we have more interns getting settled in. Hope you have a great week!

    • I haven’t seen one competition. Lol. I hope you’ll have a great week, too!

  • Oh wow, I have a hard time juggling two books much less 4

    • I know right? I’m all over the place this week!

  • I had a nice weekend. Participated in a workout challenge and watched the olympics opening ceremony, which was lovely and artistic. Yeah, babies are cute and I love holding them, feeding them, and playing with them (I have none). But they do grow up lol

I can relate about reading more than one book at a time. I do this with ebooks and physical books. I’m trying to lower my pile but it seems so impossible. These stories look interesting. Sadly I haven’t started the Game of Thrones series, much less have ever watched the tv show, but I would love to. Seems so fascinating. Enjoy the rest of your week πŸ™‚

    Shane @ Itching for Books

    • It sure is. I can’t believe I’m loving it, though. I have an aversion to fantasy, so this is quite a surprise.

  • Keertana @ Ivy Book Bindings

YAAAS to GoT! I binge-read the first four books, though Book 5 took me, sadly, far too long to get through. But, these books are amazing and I hope you love them!!!

I’m also really glad you got to spend some time with babies when you’ve been wanting another one! My dad was 44 when my mom went ahead and had my younger brother (she’s 11 years younger, admittedly) but it’s definitely do-able and while I know that my brother has to deal with my father’s shoulder pain and what-not when he’s 13 while my dad was much more fit and able when I was 13, it was a decision my parents never regretted.

I hope you have a wonderful month ahead, dear! πŸ™‚

    • So far so good! The audio helps. πŸ™‚

Yeah. Sometimes, I think about how tired I am after a full day of work and the wanting a baby all but disappears. Lol.

  • Karen

I might check out the Evanovich book. I’ve wanted to try her too but the other series is so far along it’s daunting.

    Karen @For What It’s Worth

    • Exactly! I really am enjoying this one, though. Let’s discover the books together! Lol.

  • Babies! Are you planning for one?
The new Janet Evanovich sounds good. I’ve read a couple of her books, but I was never invested enough to want to continue with the bazillion installments.
And Game of Thrones. I have to say, I am interested but the length of this series scares me. I’m thinking if I do end up wanting to read it, I’ll listen to it on audio.
I hope you have a good week!

    • Noooo. I’m wanting one so so bad, Nick. Sigh.

  • ChristinaBookAddict

So many of my friends love the Game of Thrones books…even my husband reads them and he isn’t really a big reader. I hope you enjoy it! I hear you about the baby fever. Think about those sleepless nights though…I am in the thick of it with teething! It’s nice to be able to babysit and give the baby back at the end of the night. πŸ™‚ I’m glad you enjoyed it. I hope you have a great week!

    • oh, no. The teething stage is such a nightmare! I hope your baby’s not being too fussy.

  • I’m so glad you’re loving A Game of Thrones!! I borrowed my sister’s copy last year (or was it the year before?) and I have never started it. Ugh. I wanted to but 800 pages with small texts and spaces is sooooo scary -____- but soon… hopefully…

    • It’s really good! You have to get an audio copy to facilitate your physical copy. The pages just seem to melt away.

  • Good on you for tackling A Song of Ice and Fire, I don’t know if I would ever do it because I’m so intimidated by it’s length! Oh man, you should talk to my partner lol, he’s so clucky but I’m definitely not ready yet. I’ve been missing your blog Joy, I’ve been so preoccupied with real life I haven’t had time to visit blogs. Sucks when you’re unhappy at your job you know? Anyway, hope you’re well!

    • Thank goodness for Audible! Honestly, it’s the only way I can read these books. I’ve always wanted to read them so let’s hope I’ll continue to enjoy them. It’s all good, Jeann. I know you’ve just moved so you’ve been busy. πŸ™‚

  • I haven’t read the Game of Thrones series and I’m not really sure I want to. From what I understand, everyone gets killed off. I just can’t take the heartbreak!

    • Sigh. I’m anticipated all those killings so I think I can handle them whey they come. Lol.

  • Ooooh, do you think a new baby might be in the cards? Perhaps you could trade off and offer to buy him a new Xbox in exchange for all the nappies and sleepless nights? You’re still young and have time. We’re around the same age and I’m yet to have my first, so you’ve got a few years of kids on me already πŸ˜€ I’m struggling at the moment with tonsilitis. Trying to read, have fallen behind on the blog and everything else is going balls up. Hoping this week goes a bit better. Knowing my luck, probably not.

    • Definitely not. πŸ™ Lol. He’s not a gamer, though. I hope you’ll feel better soon. That sounds painful!

  • I used to read all of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum books, so good. I quit after about 17 or 18 of them because they were getting stale for me. They’re really worth reading though if you like humor, romance and a mystery. I have tried some of her books since then, and they are just not the same for me. I hope this one continues to be good, cause usually she is a good writer. And of course I hope the ARC’s get better for you! Good luck with them πŸ™‚

    • I think I’m going to go on a hunt for those books at the charity shops. Lol. I’m curious.

      • That’s how I got started on J.D.Robb books, kept finding them until I could read them in order. You really should read these in order too though as it’s a continuing romance story-and yes there’s a grown up love triangle.

        • Someone just mentioned the love triangle in the Stephanie Plum series so avoiding that like the plague. Lol.
