On the Night Table [37]: July Reads

A Walk in the Sun by Michelle Zink | My Lady Jane by Hand, Ashton, & Meadows | Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare | The Beast by J.R. Ward

Hello. Me again.

Every month, I have a hard time planning what books I desperately need to get to above all the other poor books on my TBR pile currently collecting dust on my bedroom floor. I decided to give priority to the heavy-weights to give my floor joists a bit of a break. Lady Midnight is definitely a contender, along with The Beast by JR Ward. I would probably end up downloading these books on audio just because my arms wouldn’t be able to handle that kind of weight training while reading them.

I’ve started A Walk in the Sun by Michelle Zink last night and was pleasantly surprised that I’m enjoying it even if the story is very stereotypical farmer romance. Heh. And because practically everyone I knew has been singing My Lady Jane’s high praises, I decided to find out what the dealio was.

In July, I hope to keep up my reading streak. I think 20 books a month is realistic. I’m just going to keep doing what I do best and read books that don’t require much thinking on my part. Ha.

And now, an obligatory Justin Trudeau picture because it’s Canada Day.

  • Well I buy probably twenty books a month. Does that count? I am not even sure how many books I read a month. I tend to stay away from the big books since I started reviewing, although I do occasional get to the 500 page range. I hope you enjoy your books this month and keep on your roll!

I really want to check out Lady Midnight, why oh why, is it so long?

  • Keertana @ Ivy Book Bindings

PLEASE post a Trudeau picture every day! *fans self* I’m so excited for you to read My Lady Jane and looove it and I’m also really curious about Lady Midnight! It’s on my TBR…I think?…but I’m holding off on it for some inexplicable reason so if you love it it’ll be just the motivation I need. Happy Reading, Joy! πŸ™‚

  • Ahh I wish I could read 20 books a month! *_* I still need to read Lady Midnight – I’ve heard such good things! *_*

  • 20 books? Wow! That what I do in like 4 months these days and that’s lame! Lol. Some great picks on that table. I have to read all of them in due course specially Lady Midnight. Happy July!

    • Oh, trust me. I’ve had those kind of stints where I can’t finish anything. Like in May, for example. I only read 3 books. So that was pretty lame. Lol.

  • Happy Canada Day! *waves Canadian flag* Gosh, in terms of world leaders he’s a real looker isn’t he.

Lady Midnight! I can’t tell you how skeptical I was of that one Joy, that thought of ‘read one Shadowhunter book and you’ve read them all’ but that’s so not the case there. I still believe she had a ghostwriter helping her, because she doesn’t do funny, and LM is really charming.

I do that too Joy. If A book starts getting too hefty and my arms are tired, I’ll often whip out the Kindle and buy an Amazon ecopy so I can snuggle under the covers without having my arms ripped from their sockets. It’s a pit you don’t get discount codes when you purchase a hardcopy of a book, would save us both so much money.

    • Hahah! Thanks, Kelly. I’ve been really keen to read my copy of Lady Midnight since I got it. But I just haven’t had the time. It’s great to know that you’ve enjoyed it.

Happy Canada Day! I hope you enjoy A Walk in the Sun….it’s a cute summertime read. Very Nicholas Sparks. Have a great weekend!

    • I just finished it. It was okay, I suppose. It was one of those really quiet, really tender reads.

  • 20 books a month … lame. Kidding! I wish I could do that. Happy Canada Day. Yesterday. πŸ˜€

    • Hahahah! Thanks, Christy. I’ve been a busy reader.

  • Aah, good on you, sorting out your books! I’ve been looking at my physical tbr shelf today and I know I need to get to it, and there are so many books on there that are calling to me and I GOT BECAUSE I WANTED TO READ THEM, and it makes no sense that I haven’t yet, but ah. Apparently other things often manage to take priority. I definitely plan to sort that out in the second half of the year.

Ooh, the Shadow Hour has a really nice cover. I haven’t even read The Girl at Midnight yet, but I saw that cover and was like “I recognise the feel of this?” and then I read the tiny writing. Intuition. I will claim intuition always.

    • It’s depressing, isn’t it? I hyperventilate every time I see my TBR bookshelves. Lol.

  • Good luck in July! I want to get my reading streak back up. I’m curious on My Lady Jane!

    • Same to you, Amanda! I’m sure now that your conference is out of the way, you’ll be able to read more.

  • WHOO πŸ˜€ Best of luck reading these books Joy. <3 Ahh, I loved Lady Midnight and My Lady Jane SO MUCH πŸ˜€ I shall be upset if you don't love them too, haha πŸ™‚ Can't wait to hear your thoughts. <3 Hugs.

I do really want to read My Lady Jane. I hope you enjoy it. Everyone does seem to like it a lot.

  • I am so bad at planning out my reads. I make plans and then usually read something else. Oh well. I don’t think that I have squeezed 20 books into a month in a very long time. I hope you enjoy all of your July reads!

    • Oh, I’m the same, Carole. What I do is try to limit what I planned to read for the month, that way, if I read something else, I wouldn’t feel so bad.

  • LOL! Love the pic! Verra nice. πŸ˜€ Happy Canada Day! Can’t wait to see what you think of My Lady Jane. πŸ™‚

  • I have Lady Midnight to read too but I feel like I should read the clockwork angel series first… I’ve heard great things about my lady jane. Happy reading Joy!

    • Thankfully, I’m caught up with that series! Really excited about it, tbh. πŸ™‚

  • Trudeu sure looks good

  • I love the random Trudeau pic haha Have you seen this tweet? https://twitter.com/everythingsjake/status/748248455865376768 Made my frickin’ day yesterday πŸ˜€ Hope you enjoy your books, Lady Midnight is on my TBR as well. πŸ™‚

    • Hahahah! Yass. That Mexican president, though. Helloooo, El Presidente. *fans self*

  • Here’s to a great July! I look forward to all your upcoming reviews! πŸ˜€

  • Melliane

Nice books to look forward! happy reading!

  • RO

That man is totally hot! (lol) Looking forward to your review on The Angels Share. Hope your day is fab! Hugs…RO

    • Hahahah! I don’t get it. I have a friend who is completely in love with this man.

  • Ooh I hope you like Lady Midnight if you do end up picking it up. Such a fun and romantic book.
I read The Shadow Hour and I liked it for the most part though it wasn’t as engaging as the first book for me.
    Happy reading!

    • I just saw your review! Aw. I’m bummed. I do need a re-reread before I pick this up. I can’t recall anything about the first book. Welp.

  • Kara Lauren

I heard that My Lady Jane is hilarious, I hope you like it and find it funny. I haven’t read anything by J.R. Ward or Cassandra Clare…TBR 4 life. hehe

    • Lol! Girl, you don’t know the half of it. I’ve got years of backlog.

  • I’m soooooo behind on reading! Wish I could keep up haha. I can’t wait to read MY LADY JANE–I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about it πŸ˜€ Happy reading

    • Sameeee. Weekends are the only time I get to do any kind of reading. Sigh.

  • I wish I could read 20 books a month! I have requested My Lady Jane at my local library so hopefully I can get it soon. I know Ellen is reading it too. Hopefully both of you will enjoy it πŸ™‚

    • I hope so, too. Or I’m going to be so mad! Everyone I know looooves it.

  • I hope you can continue enjoying all of these books this month! And I wish I could read 20 a month. At one point I was rolling in 12 but then life happened haha. I’m gonna try and get back up there! I should seriously be getting round to Lady Midnight at some point myself too, especially as I love Shadowhunters.

    • Thank you, Olivia. I wish the same for you. <3
