Hoarders, Books Edition: Episode 178

Love, Lies, and Spies by Cindy Anstey | Half A Lifelong Romance by Eileen Chang | Tell Me Three Things by Julie Buxbaum | When We Collided by Emery Lord | The Haters  by Jesse Andrews | The Last Boy and Girl in the World by Siobhan Vivian | The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater | A Gathering of Shadows by V. E. Schwab

As you can tell from the books I’ve hoarded this week, my earlier plan to only buy what I want to read was thrown out of the window. In my defense, three of these books were bought by my husband from his work trip to Washington (When We Collided, A Gathering of Shadows, Half A Lifelong Romance). I went to the bookstore with my kids on Saturday with every intention of picking up one book and one book only (Tell Me Three Things), but best-laid plans and all that. Though I shouldn’t feel so guilty about going considering The Raven King was put out early. Still. I ended up with more books that I’d intended.

Playing Catch Up

I am, once again, playing catch up with you all. Now that my husband is home, I think I’ll be able to do more blogging stuff when I get home from work. I’ve given myself some talking to about Netflix and Gilmore Girls. I promised to keep my watching to a minimum of two episodes a night. I know it’s tough to keep to that promise, but I will try.

Being Busy

Work is going well. I’m just so happy fo finally have a structure again. Being off work and not knowing what to do with my time was tough. It’s funny how I kept wishing about being a stay-at-home mom before I lost my job. And when I was finally at home, I found out that I would rather be slaving away at a desk for 8 hours a day.

What about you? How has your week been? Have you read any of these books?

  • RO

Netflix can sure be addictive, right? Mine has the British Baking Show. It’s so amazing to see them prepare all those unique treats so perfectly. Hugs…

  • Funny how you were enjoying work… and then tore your ACL! I hope you are back soon.

  • I am happy to say that I hope to soon understand why everyone loves the Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater. I’m a little late to the bandwagon, but I did pick up the Raven Boys during my most recent library visit. I’m actually terrified to pick it up and read it though because what if I’m the oddball that doesn’t like it?

    • Oh I hope you will, Jackie! And if you don’t, it doesn’t matter. That’s just the way it goes sometimes. Confession: I didn’t enjoy The Raven King. Sigh.

  • Uh my week has been good. I’m on holiday now. But I don’t feel in the mood to read even though review copies are piling up, and I don’t feel in the mood to blog at all. I’ve skipped two of my usual posts and I don’t know about putting more up. Times like this makes me think about giving up blogging and just bookstagramming and booktubing alone…

But it seems like you had a good week! Maybe you weren’t supposed to get this many books, but you did get some good ones! I really want to try When We Collided myself and the The Last Boy and Girl in the World is getting pretty good reviews!

    • Nooooo don’t give up, Olivia! We just have those weeks, you know? We just have to learn keep swinging. And the sooner we learn to accept that blogging isn’t going to be all fun and games all the time, the sooner we’ll be better off.

  • I think you should just binge watch Gilmore Girls. I keep starting that series over and over, and stopping at the same exact spot I stopped at last. Maybe this time I will watch all of it through? Also I am very jealous of you getting The Raven King! I won’t be getting a physical copy until much later.

    • Gah. I’m in the tail end of season 5 now (also known as the Logan season). Still keeping my Jess hopes alive. Lol.

  • So many amazing books you’ve collected! Asdfghj I know what you mean about the work thing. Since I’m in the States and I’m Canada – I can’t work, but I can’t wait until I’m able to! I’m so happy you’re back at work Joy! I hope things keep looking up c:

    • Thanks, Kynndra. Oh that’s rough. I remember when I was going to school and I keep dreaming of being able to make my own money to buy things. Now that I’m working, I keep hoping I don’t have to work but still able to have money. Lol. Such a conundrum.

  • I love the new books! I don’t think my husband would be able to pick out books for me. I am glad that the job is going well. Enjoy!

    Carole @ Carole’s Random Life

    • Oh hahahah! I gave him a list before he left. 🙂

  • Wait! Your husband went on a business trip and came home with 3 books you actually want to read? What a nice guy! I am so glad you like your job! And just wait when it comes time to retire someday, you will absolutely love being home. At least I do and have from the minute I retired back in 2008-and I retired 11 years early, but so worth it! Enjoy your books!

    • I gave him a list of 5 books but only came home with 3 because B & N didn’t have the other two. 🙂 And thank you so much. I am grateful to everyone’s encouraging words while I was in search of a job.

  • I do better with routine too Joy. I’m glad you’re back working and finally enjoying it again. I loved When We Collided and looking forward to seeing what you think of it. It’s one of those books that seems to have reviewers torn. I’ve got a review copy of Love, Lies and Spies too, I know nothing about it and haven’t read the synopsis even. I might let you take one for the team on that first before I decide whether or not to read it 😀

    • Yeah. That’s why I’m a little wary. Eeeep. I’m still infinitely curious, though. Anytime! 🙂

  • I’ve been telling myself that I’ll but Tell Me Three Things but I always end up picking a different book instead. ugh.

    • It’s so good, Czai. You should definitely read it. 😉

  • Yay, I’m happy to hear work is going great Joy! I wouldn’t be able to resist The Raven King as well. I would love to grab up Love, Lies, and, Spies. Enjoy 🙂

    • Thanks, Kim. Right? No question, I had to pick it up. Love, Lies, and Spies has such a pretty cover. I haven’t read it yet, though. 😉

  • So many of those are on my TBR! Glad your job is going well. 🙂

  • shootingstarsmag

I’m glad things are going well with your new job. It’s good you had that time off to realize you really DID want to have a job you went too instead of being a stay at home mom. Some people wish for one or the other but don’t really have the chance to see if it works for them.

It looks like you got some awesome books, even if you did go over the amount you wanted. haha I really want to read When We Collided!!

    • I’ve been thinking about that one as well. Last year, while I was working a more stressful job, I keep dreaming about being a stay-at-home mom. Then I lost my job. Since then, I realize I can’t bear to just sit at home and not earning my keep. Funny how life works out that way. 🙂

  • While 83% of everyone enjoyed The Last Boy and Girl in the World, I may be giving it a gloriously low rating — to which I will preface this comment to say: I apologize for not warning you ahead of time if you too also do not enjoy it. BUT, I hope you do and so this message is nonsense. Also, AGOS, yes, you should read it now (yesterday?).

    • Thanks for the warning. The synopsis sounds so good, though and I’m a fan of this scenario. 😉

  • You have kids?? In my mind you’re this 20-year-old girl who goes to school and keeps spending money buying books!! oh boy.

    • Hahahah! I have a 14-year-old and a nine-year-old. Funny.

  • Yay for work! I know you were bored to death so your splurge is very justified

    • ….but now i can’t stop splurging. Whelp.

  • Ooh, let’s talk Gilmore Girls. What season are you on? I bingewatched all the episodes this summer and enjoyed it so much. I’m kind of scared for the reunion show…

    • I’m on season 5 which is drawing to a close. I’ve got two more seasons to go. I had the mistake of clicking at pictures of the new show. Lots of spoilers. bah.

  • Hoarding is such a great and perfect word for us. LOL

Oooohhh so many good ones and I’ll also add my voice to the Raven King!

    • Exactly. Though my quest to minimize my life is falling way over the wayside. Sigh.

  • i’m SO, SO happy to hear that your work is going great! I always told you it would! Didn’t I? DIDN’T I? 🙂 That’s what I need in my life: A LOT OF STRUCTURE. I just need a job where I can set myself to a schedule because right now I’m currently working in a store and the hours are ANYTHING but predictable, so pray for me that I do find a job! <3 Oh! and it's never a bad thing to hoard books! <3

    • Hey girl! How are you? Gah. I keep meaning to tell you that your comment section has been finicky on me lately. Sometimes I can comment, sometimes, I can’t. Anyway, I’ll do a massive commenting spree on your blog as soon as I’m done here, I promise.

  • I NEED THE RAVEN KING RIGHT NOW. I’ve just finished Blue Lily, Lily Blue and have to wait!! EEEEEEEP.

    • Yay! I’m guessing you’ve enjoyed the books? 🙂

  • Keertana @ Ivy Book Bindings

I am so excited to read The Raven King! I’m curious to see what you make of When We Collided because I had mixed feelings about it but Tell Me Three Things is SO GOOD. I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did but it’s adorable. Happy Reading, Joy!

    • This is what I keep hearing. I am on the fence and that’s why I keep putting it off.

  • kindlemom1

I can’t believe Raven King was out early! I so would have grabbed it too. My copy has been pre-ordered for, well, forever now! I can’t wait, only one more day though right?

Gilmore Girls! That freaking show is so addicting. We (my husband and I) couldn’t just watch two. We spent numerous Sundays doing nothing but binge watching one summer, it was terrible and fantastic all at the same time! I have to warn you though, once it is over you are going to be so so sad! I had like, TV show hangover for a really long time after.

    • Me and the kids bonded over Gilmore Girls the whole time my husband was away. Lol. Now, when we watch it, the kids and I take turns shushing him when he asks questions. Lol.

  • I’m so happy to hear that work is going so well for you, Joy! 🙂 I can’t wait to get back some kind of structure myself.
And what a beautiful book haul you have! I love those white spines. I’ll be reading the Raven cycle series soon hopefully and I’m excited to join the fandom. I need to read A Gathering of Shadows too but honestly, I’m a little scared because I hear it has a love triangle.
I hope you have a wonderful week ahead and happy bingeing of GG! 🙂

    • What?! What love triangle? Noo! I don’t remember it having one. OMG.

      • I honestly don’t know why I said love triangle …
There was definitely no triangle in ADSOM.
I think maybe I meant cliffhanger? Haha omg im so sorry for the scare.

  • What a great book haul, Joy. I
    think all of us bookish people can relate so much to buying more books than intended;
so don’t feel bad about it. You are not alone in your book addiction. Lol. I
glad to hear your work is going well; I hope this is what you want and what
    makes you happy.

  • So glad work is going well 😀 That makes me so happy. <3 Yay. And ahh, SO MANY BOOKS 😀 So jealous about The Raven King. <3 My copies MIGHT arrive this friday.. but if not, maybe next monday. Ugh. I hate waiting. Hmph. But I know all the spoilers, lol, so I'm good with waiting 😀 Ahh, I hope you love it. <3 Happy reading Joy 🙂

    • Thanks, Carina. Unfortunately, The Raven King and I didn’t see eye to eye on some things. But I ended up enjoying the ending, regardless.

      • Gaaah 🙁 I’m so sorry you didn’t fully love it sweet girl. <'3 I haven't re-read the first 3 books yet.. but soon 😀 I'm just nervous, lol. But ahhh. I wish to know why you had issues with it, hih 🙂

  • I’m glad work is going so well! Tell Me Three Things – I’m so happy to see you got that one!!

    • Thanks, Brandie. TMTT is so good! I think your review is one of the things that made me want to pick up a copy. 🙂

  • Glad to hear that work is going well for you. A Gathering of Shadows by V. E. Schwab is the book that I’m really wanting to try.

Melanie @ Hot Listens & Rabid Reads

    • Thanks, Melanie! I hope you’ll get to read it soon (if you haven’t, at least).

  • ChristinaBookAddict

I hope you enjoy When We Collided…I really liked it! I’m also interested in Love, Lies & Spies…sounds like a book I’d enjoy! Hope you had a great weekend.

    • Thanks, Christina. I hope so, too. The cover looks great. 🙂

  • I’m glad work is going well for you 🙂 I just had a week off to do assignments, and wish I had another one to be honest 🙁 but I’ll be back there tomorrow. We’re always wishing for what we don’t have, I suppose!

Love, Lies, and Spies sounds like it might be fun. I think I’m going to have to check that one out for myself!

  • Structure is good for you 🙂

  • I’m nervous about The Raven King, Joy! I hope it all ends well. Leave Gansey alone, Maggie!

    • hahahah! I know right? So cruel, that woman!

  • It’s always fascinating that we always want to what we can’t have isn’t it. I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying the job. Don’t beat yourself up over the book hoarding, if it makes you happy there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it.

    • You said it. 🙂 I’m resigned to this idea.

  • Well you’ve had a lot more restraint than you used to, so I count this as a win. 😉 Besides, you’re going to read them all …. right? Eventually. 😀

    • The challenge now is, to try and resist the weekly mantra that I deserve this. Lol.
