Hoarders, Books Edition: Episode 177

Opportunity Knocks by Alison Sweeney | Shift by Hugh Howey | Scarred Souls by Tillie Cole | We Are the Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson | Opening Belle by Maureen Sherry | The Beast by J.R. Ward | Eligible by Curtis Sittenfield

It’s been a miserable weekend as far as the weather goes here in my city. It’s been raining and cold. But it was a perfect weekend for bookworms like us, isn’t it? We were supposed to finish up packing the cabin so we can move everything out by the time my husband gets back from his work trip to Washington next Saturday, but he didn’t want to drive up in the rain. So we ended up staying in. The best thing about this weekend in was that I decided to pick up some books that have been on my shopping list for a while.

So while I should feel bad about buying more books knowing that I will have to make room in the basement for the ones from the cabin, I really couldn’t. I’m not going to give myself a pat on the back thinking that I deserve these books. I’m not going to make excuses for breaking my book buying ban either. I’m just going to let things be and see how I feel after everything is said and done. I think it’s going to be a phenomenal place once I’ve got all my books shelved and organized. We’ll see.

I would like to thank HBG USA for my copy of Alison Sweeney’s Opportunity Knocks, and Penguin Random House Canada for my copy of Eligible.

I’ve officially cancelled BEA this year. I know I’m not going to get my money back because they’re nonrefundable, but I don’t have any other choice. I’m sad, but remaining employed is a priority right now. Lol. I’m sure there’ll be other opportunities in the future.

I hope you’re all enjoying what’s left of your weekend. My husband is away next week, which means I’m going to be miserable. Bah. Heck, I’m already miserable. *sobs*

Happy reading!

  • Awww… you have the Beast! I want to get that one, although I am a little behind in Ward’s books.

  • Adriana C

I hope everything goes well. And from your books IΒ΄ll be waiting your review of The Beast.

  • I hope all the cabin moving has been going well for you, Joy. I imagine it’d be a pretty bittersweet thing, especially moving your old things out and finding new places for them, although I hope in the end you can clearly know it was the right decision for the time. *hugs* I hope you enjoy your books and do what you said, not think about the reasons that might have stopped you buying them and just see what happens. xx

  • Jazmen

Too bad you’re not going to BEA but having to work is not too bad of a reason. And I’m glad you got Imperfect Chemistry. Hope you enjoy it!

  • So sorry that BEA isn’t going to work, but I totally get that you have to make work a priority. I hope you’re enjoying the job and things are going well with it!

  • Awww, sorry to hear that you had to cancel BEA Joy, but sometimes you have to minimise your loss. We actually had to forfeit our flights to Hawaii earlier in the year too for a similar reason. Good luck with moving out of the cabin, Joy!

  • Sorry about BEA. I won’t be going either πŸ™
And I’m so excited to read Eligible. Yes, I’ve read approximately 1000 P and P retellings, but I can’t wait to try it!

  • Sorry to hear about BEA πŸ™ I always say I’ll go “next year” but I always end up having bigger priorities so I put it off. Anyways, it looks like you got a nice book haul! Enjoy your books! <3

  • So sorry to hear about BEA πŸ™ But you have some lovely new books, and you’re still hard at work with your job <3 I haven't read any of the ones you've picked up but I read a book by Shaun Hutchinson, which is why I really want to read We Are The Ants myself as well. Oh, and Imperfect Chemistry is one I have been seeing a lot of people fangirling about. I'm still on my ban and haven't bought a book for a month and a half… which is really calming and I am saving money like I need to. I'm still far from my goal. But the best thing? I obtained Lady Midnight without buying it!!

  • I haven’t heard of any of these – except for J.R. Ward – so it’ll be nice to see some reviews of books that I should maybe check out πŸ™‚

  • I have Imperfect Chemistry and The Year We Fell Down on my kindle. Just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Hope your weather gets better! I also want to see your shelves when they’re done. πŸ˜€

  • I got a copy of Eligible and The Beast, too. The Beast was entertaining and I hope we both like Eligible.

Bummer about the BEA, but I can understand employment being the priority here. πŸ™‚

  • Keertana @ Ivy Book Bindings

I’ve heard a lot of good things about We Are the Ants and The Year We Fell Down–they’re both on my TBR!–so I’m excited to see what you make of them. I need the motivation to bump them up, tbh. Happy Reading and I hope the weather improves–April is a month of rain when all you really crave is the hot sun (at least for me)!

  • Yuck, I’m sorry about crappy weather : That is never any fun. We don’t have any heat here, but there was some sun today, and I was sweating like crazy while sitting still outside in it, lol. But no spring for aaages here. Sigh. And aw, yaaay for buying new books πŸ˜€ You should always do what you feel like. <3 Hugs. Looks like awesome ones πŸ™‚ Happy reading Joy. <3 But oh gosh. I am so sorry that you had to cancel BEA πŸ™ Soooobs. Makes me so sad for you. But I also totally understand. You are amazing for being able to cancel it. Ack. But gosh, you really won't get your money back? If I had to cancel anything here, we would just contact our insurance thingy, and they would give us our money back :p Which we had to do for London in February. Sobs. Still not over it :p But anyway. I hope you will get to go to BEA next year, maybe. <3 All the hugs.

  • I’m so sorry that you had to cancel BEA. But yeah, it will be less stressful for you for sure this way. Plus, BEA will ALWAYS be around.

Also, We Are the Ants is really good. I hope you get to it soon!

  • I’m so jealous you’ve got We Are the Ants! It looks like such an amazing book, but I don’t usually buy hard covers so I think I’m going to wait until it’s in paperback (or maybe for Kindle). I’m so sorry you’ve had to cancel your plans for BEA! It must have been such a hard decision, especially because that it quite a lot of money to lose. Lovely haul <3

  • They don’t refund? That’s such bullshit. By law they should have to either refund tickets of allow you to transfer them over to someone else. I’m so sorry Joy, that’s a fair chunk of money to lose as well. You’ve been working tirelessly to declutter, you shouldn’t need to justify treating yourself to some new reads πŸ™‚ I can’t wait to see the transformation once it’s all simplified. Mine is slow going, but getting there and still treating myself in the process too <3

  • I bought We Are the Ants, too! You’re probably gonna get to it before me, so I hope you like it πŸ˜€ Hasn’t rained here near MontrΓ©al. Actually, today looks like a real summer day!!

  • You have really been good about the buying book ban, so I don’t think you should feel guilty-especially now that you have a job. Plus not going to BEA is bound to save all kinds of money-sorry you can’t go btw! Sucks you can’t get a refund! Enjoy your books and the week coming up πŸ™‚

  • Awww noooo. What a bummer about BEA! Hopefully you’ll be able to go next year! And what a lovely haul! I haven’t read any of these except Imperfect Chemistry, which I got for free on ibooks a while ago. It was actually not too bad. It was pretty funny and I liked the characters. I was a bit annoyed about the psychology aspects in the book though. It was really obvious that the author knew nothing about psychology or research and couldn’t be bothered to research it thoroughly before writing the book. But apart from that it was a pretty enjoyable read!

I’ve tried really hard to stop feeling guilty about buying books just because it is my hobby and I never get mad when my husband buys things for his regardless of how expensive so I should cut myself some slack too right? If only it were that easy though. πŸ˜›

Congrats on the new books and getting some reading time in. πŸ˜‰

  • ChristinaBookAddict

I’m sorry to hear about BEA. I have never been…hopefully one day! I hope things get better for you. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Eligible. It was such a fun read…perfect if you need something light. Enjoy your books!

  • Great looking books, esp year we fell down . have a great week and happy reading.

  • I’m sorry you can’t go to BEA.
But, yay for new books! I really need to continue the BDB series. I’ve only read the first book (but I loved it).

  • Sad about BEA. πŸ™ I have all the opportunities to go (short drive, friend to put me up, etc.) except that I don’t have funds for the ticket, so it’s disappointing for me as well. πŸ˜› One day, one day. πŸ˜€

  • Yay for new books. Sorry you’re not able to make it to BEA. I was hoping I could go, but I just didn’t have the funds. Maybe next year I’ll be able to go to a conference.

it’s always nice to have new books! Sorry for BEA, I hope everything will be ok

  • Enjoy the books!

  • shootingstarsmag

We are the Ants is so good! I am curious about Opening Belle too; hope it’s a nice read. Sorry about your husband leaving soon – hopefully you can fall into a nice read while he’s gone. I’m sorry about BEA! It makes sense, but that’s still a bummer you can’t make it.
