Shrill by Lindy West | Marked in Flesh by Anne Bishop | Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

Hello.

I hope y’all had a great week and that your long weekend is off to a fantastic start. SorryΒ that it’s been a slow week over here, but I got too involved with Seveneves for the last few days that I’ve not had the chance to read anything else. I also decided to paint my bedroom walls and it literally knocked me off my feet for two days. I was exhausted. So far, no news on the job hunt, but I’m not losing hope just yet.

These books are actually from last week’s purchases and for-review-pile. I was not able to include it on the previous Hoarders post. I would like to thank Hachette Books USA for sending me a copy of Shrill by Lindy West. I started reading it yesterday and it’s hilarious so far. It’s a memoir that focuses on growing up that will hopefully lend me some lessons on personal acceptance. I’ll let you know how the rest of it goes.

Y’all know how much I love Anne Bishop’s The Others series. I’ve been dying to get my hands on Marked in Flesh since I finished Murder of Crows last year. I just don’t know when I’ll be able to tackle it. I think I will be taking a break from requesting books in May because I’m really behind. I’ve got so many books I want to tackle before the madness of BEA.

And all the haters can suck it with Cassandra Clare. Seriously. I’m dyingggg to read Lady Midnight. Dying.

Anywho, sorry again for the lack of post this week. It’s the long weekend, so I probably won’t be around until Sunday to catch up with you all. Hoping to write a bunch of posts while we’re away in the cabin.

Happy reading, everyone!

  • Hehe… yup! The haters can suck it, I’m looking forward to Lady Midnight too!

  • Adriana C

I still havenΒ΄t finish reading the mortal instruments series, I need to catch up.
    Great haul!

  • Hey there!! My god, I feel like it’s been so long!
It’s Lola, from Hit or Miss Books, if you remember me *.*

So I bought Lady Midnight as well… BUT I have not finished TMI or TID so I need to do that first. Hmm.

    • Hey Lola. It has been a while. I’m glad you’re active again. πŸ™‚ Enjoy Lady Midnight!

  • Don’t worry! Things have been super slow at my blog and LIFE as well! I’ve been taking it easy and refusing to stress out! Because at the end of the day, why worry about anything?? I’m glad to hear you’re doing okay and I can’t wait to read Lady Midnight! I’ve been hearing good things about it! <3

    • True. True. I’ve been trying not too dwell on life’s suckiness nowadays, but it’s hard when it’s front and centre. Oh well, one day at a time, is what I say.

  • It’s been slow at my blog too, especially with reviews and such. Would love to read these. I haven’t started that Ann Bishop series but I’m sooooo intrigued by it. Seems a lot of people love it too. Haven’t read Clare’s previous serious but maybe sometime in summer I’ll pick up Mortal Instruments. Hope you enjoy Lady Midnight. Good luck on the job hunt πŸ™‚

    • Thanks, Shane. It’s been tough, but I’m sure you’re busy because of your writing. πŸ™‚ Me? Not so much. Lol.

  • Denise Baer

I enjoy painting. It’s exhausting, but the results are amazing. Hope you rested at the cabin and enjoyed some of those books.

    http://baerbookspress.com/blog/

    • So very exhausting. I like the clean walls now – the bedroom looks spacious. πŸ™‚

  • Painting walls is hell, I hope
your bedroom is gorgeous now! And good luck with your job hunting!

  • You wouldn’t believe it, Joy, but I’ve heard of TWO of these books. I know. I feel like I need a fanfare for my excellent bookish knowledge, since I never know about half the books people are talking about. AM I SUDDENLY IN TUNE OR SOMETHING? Or was it luck?
    It was luck. Wasn’t it.
I hope you’ll post pictures of your newest painting endeavours on IG! I was watching your house minimisation a couple weeks back with so much interest. I loved the black paint you used. So pretty. xx

    • Hahahah! Romi livesssss! I’m glad you’ve come up for air. πŸ™‚

  • Ha, I love how people either love Lady Midnight or hate it. It’s so weird, like if you don’t like it…don’t read it?
I never finished the series but I was curious about this new world, do you think I HAVE to finish TMI series? I got up to book 5.
Enjoy your new books Joy and have a great week!

    • Right? That’s all I’m saying. I don’t reserve the right to tell an author to stop writing. Sigh. Some people, I swear.

  • I hope you had a great long weekend! I spent mine in bed because I was sick. Finally starting to feel better … and thinking of all the potential reading time I missed, lol. I don’t read much memoirs but I’ll be interested to know your thoughts on Shrill. It looks pretty small so if it ends up being a great read, I may just give it a try.

    • Oh boo. I hope you’re feeling so much better! Take care.

  • Jazmen

Looking forward to some new reviews. Have fun at the cabin!

    • Thanks, Jaz. Wasn’t much of a weekend, unfortunately. We had a couple of showings so we weren’t able to stay.

      • Jazmen

        Aww man!

  • Lots of Cassie Clare around, hope you enjoy

  • Jenny @ Supernatural Snark

MARKED IN FLESH JOY!!!!! I can’t wait to see what you think!!! And I’m really excited for Lady Midnight too. I lost track of the Mortal instruments after book 4, but I’m looking forward to this new series.

And you’re going to be at BEA? ME TOO!!!!! We’ll have to try and meet up:)

    • OMG. YOU ARE?!!! Woman! I’m going to be pissed if I don’t see you!!! For real.

  • Karen

Hope you enjoy Marked in Flesh! I love that series πŸ™‚

    Karen @For What It’s Worth

  • Happy belated Easter Joy, I hope you had a lovely chocolate-filled weekend with your family πŸ™‚

I’ve been eyeing of The Others series – I’ve only ever heard good things and I know you love it! Not sure I’ll be getting to Lady Midnight anytime soon to be honest, I never finished either of her previously series’, even though I used to LOVE The Mortal Instruments.

    • As well to you, Joy. I did stuff myself with a ton of chocolate-covered almonds. Ugh. I hate myself. Lol. I hope you’ll read The Others. It really is an outstanding series. πŸ™‚

  • Marked in Flesh! Can’t wait to hear what you think! Hope you had fun at your cabin. I just got back from San Francisco last night. Went wine tasting on Friday so it was a busy weekend!

P.S. Good luck with your steps on Fitbit! πŸ™‚

    • We were on our way out of the city then our agent called us to let us know that there was someone interested to make an offer on the cabin. So we headed back and completely shot our weekend to heck. Oh well. Wine tasting! So posh. Lol.

      Fitbit is going well, thanks!

  • Happy Easter and long weekend, Joy! Who cares about the haters? I AM DYING TO READ LADY MIDNIGHT TOO. Your copy looks stunning. I have yet to grab myself a copy! So behind on commenting… I’ve missed coming on your blog!

    • Well, I hope you had a great one, Michelle. We had family over on Friday night, then we pretty much just vegged out the entire weekend. I’m glad to see a familiar face!

  • RO

The only thing I could probably paint and not screw up would be the baseboards, (lol) so mad props to you for getting it done! Hope all goes well with the job hunt! Hugs…RO

    • Oh trust me, it was not pretty. I might have to change our floor in the bedroom now because I left paint drips everywhere. Gah.

  • Jasprit

I’ve been seeing Marked in Flesh everywhere lately Joy, I’m one of those sucky readers who still hasn’t picked up the first book in the series yet, but I’m planning to get to it soon! I hope you have a great week!

    • Love, love, love this series, Jas. Though, I don’t know if it’s going to be your thing. I know you prefer contemporary nowadays and this one is as PNR as PNR could get. I do hope you’ll give it a go someday. πŸ™‚

  • I should really give The Others a try. I’ve seen your reviews on them and I see how much you love them, so I’m really curious. πŸ˜€ Enjoy and Happy Easter, Joy!

    • Totes. It’s pretty awesome and that’s saying a lot because I don’t do PNR/UF. I hope you had a blessed Easter, Blessie. <3

  • Marked n Flesh …. yes! Uh-oh, hope Clare’s book is good. I haven’t seen any hating on her, but now I’m curious.

    • Mostly it’s the whole she needs to move on to another world. But fans of hers (including me) refused to let her. Lol.

  • Ohh, I’m so behind–no worries! πŸ˜€ And no shame on Lady Midnight! I know I’m selling tons of copies of it at work, so lots of people are with you on it.

    • I just can’t believe that some people are gloating at the fact that Lady Midnight is underperforming in book sales. I mean, seriously. How could people be so callous?

  • shootingstarsmag

Ooh, you’re away this weekend? Have fun! I’d love to have a mini getaway right about now. lol Ah well, can’t complain. I hope your job search picks up soon! But definitely don’t give up hope. You’ll find the right job, I know it! Happy Easter,

    -Lauren
    http://www.shootingstarsmag.blogspot.com

    • Unfortunately, that didn’t work. Sigh. I hope so, too, Lauren. I really need to be a contributing part of the community now.

  • I so loved Marked in Flesh. I hoped you did too. I’m not as familiar with the others, but I hope you enjoy them too. Sorry you haven’t heard anything on the job front. I know that can time some time. Just keep looking and keep your hopes up. You will find something eventually.

Melanie @ Hot Listens & Rabid Reads

    • I haven’t read it yet. But hopefully, soon. I know. I’m getting restless and yes, trying to keep a positive outlook on things as much as I can. Thanks, Melanie. <3

  • I hope Clare’s is good. I didn’t enjoy Bane’s serials at all, it was too MG! I was hoping for it to be edgier or more adult because… it’s Magnus Bane! Sigh.

    Happy Easter!

    • Oh I know right? His books need to be R-rated so we can all bask in his glory!

  • Hope you enjoy your time at the cabin after all the painting you are doing you need a nice break. Sorry no news about a job. Marked in Flesh is definitely worth making time to read it. Love that series so much! Happy Easter and have a great rest of the weekend πŸ™‚

    • Thanks, Lorna. We did enjoy that bit of time that we spent shovelling the driveway. Lol. More snow!

  • Natalie

Shrill sounds interesting. I haven’t heard of that one before. I’ve never gotten into the Clare’s books, but I hope you love it! Happy long weekend!

    • It was interesting and hella funny. πŸ™‚

  • Keertana @ Ivy Book Bindings

I adored Marked in Flesh and I’m definitely curious to hear about Lady Midnight. I haven’t read past Clare’s The Infernal Devices or the first three Mortal Instruments. I loved TMI (the original trilogy) and though I really hated the ending to The Infernal Devices, I enjoyed it until then so I definitely see the appeal of Lady Midnight. I think I’m a little too overwhelmed by all her books and series to keep up but I’m definitely excited to see what you make of it. Happy Reading!

    • It can be overwhelming specially since each book weighs in at 500-600 pages. So once you get behind, catching up is tough to do.

  • Painting is such hard work! Anytime I start painting I always want to do the whole house so that everything is new. My husband is not a fan of my home repair ideas πŸ™‚ I really need to read the Anne Bishop series! I am also trying to take a break from requesting ARCs. I have to give myself a chance to catch up or I am going to stress myself out. I hope you enjoy your new books!

    Carole @ Carole’s Random Life

    • Oh we’re the same. Unfortunately, I have walls that go up to 20 ft so I only paint the sections that I can paint without it looking unfinished. Lol. Yeah. I’m at the point where I’m a bit overwhelmed with all these review copies. I suck.

  • I’ve always been considering painting my room but the hassle of moving things discourages me.. ugh. I’m practically that lazy, I guess.. I’ve never read Cassandra Clare’s books but I’ve been thinking about trying it. I might try reading City of Bones when I drop by the library next time πŸ™‚

    • I hear ya. I had to move everything myself because my husband is at work. Lol.

  • I’m telling you now Joy, Lady Midnight is AMAZING! I was in two minds about it because after a billion Shadowhunter books, is she going to give us anything new? But it’s as though it’s been written by an entirely different author. The writing is more mature, it’s sarcastic and has a brilliantly dry humour. AND the MC is sassy. I’m about three quarters of the way through and absolutely loving it. Been staying awake until 3am every morning for the last few nights because I can’t put it down. REEEEEEEEAD IIIIIIT.

Have a fabulous Easter at the cabin hun and see you when you return <3 <3 <3

    • I can’t. Freaking. Wait. I can never get enough of sassy, sarcastic characters! And she does dry humour so well. πŸ™‚

  • I so need to get to these Anne Bishop books!

    • I so need you to read those Anne Bishop books!

  • Ahh, I can’t wait to read Lady Midnight! I have such high expectations of it, so I kind of don’t want to start it. I’ve had it on my shelf for a few weeks, but I just haven’t began it yet. I’m debating whether to read TSA first… I want to, so they don’t get spoilers (I’ve heard you’re meant to read them first), but they’re so expensive! Good luck with job hunting too! I hope you enjoy all these books β™₯

    Denise | The Bibliolater

  • You’re funny. They can suck it?! Don’t listen to haters…that’s exactly why I don’t read reviews before I read a book. I prefer to form my own opinions.

    Stephanie
    http://stephie5741.blogspot.com

    • Oh you know. I talk big game, but I’m pretty harmless. Lol.

  • Have fun and luck for the job hunt! I am curious about the books you mention… and I really need to jump on the Anne Bishop train!

  • kindlemom1

You are going to love Marked in Flesh. It is a long book like the others but I think it goes by super fast. Either way, I hope you love it and get caught up on all your reading!

    • Thanks, Ali! I got a bit ambitious and brought three massive books. Needless to say, I failed. Lol.

  • Ooh, I want to read Shrill. I enjoy reading the author’s articles and tweets! And yeah, will be interested to see what you think of Anne Bishop’s latest instalment! Happy reading!

    • I didn’t even know she has an online presence. I must investigate.

  • ChristinaBookAddict

Enjoy your books! I look forward to your thoughts on Lady Midnight. Have a great weekend!

  • I’m curious about Lady Midnight! I haven’t read past the 3 TMI books, but I liked those. I need to catch up it seems. πŸ™‚
And I need to find time to read Marked in Flesh too! >.<
I hope you enjoy all these books, Joy! πŸ™‚

    • Too many books to catch up on. Sigh.

      Thanks, Nick!

  • Yay for getting lots of pretty books πŸ˜€ Lady Midnight. <3 Sigh. I loved it SO MUCH. You are going to love it too πŸ˜€ Hmph. Don't get any hate for Cassie. She's awesome. And her books are the best πŸ™‚ I hope you will have an amazing weekend sweetie. <3 Happy reading πŸ™‚

  • Whoa, Lady Midnight is HUGE! I’ve only read The Mortal Instruments series, I really do need to read some more of her books (I found they got better the more I read, which is always nice!)

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

    • Right? This woman does not have a concept of light reading, I tell you that. Lol.

  • OMGGGG that’s so exciting that you got Marked in Flesh! I really want to read it, but I only have the paperback and that is going to take MONTHs to be released. So I’ve requested it from the library for now. It sounds like you were super productive delving into Seveneves and painting your bedroom! Great work and good luck on the job hunt!

  • Melliane

I just loved the Bishop one!

  • AARGH I am dying to read Lady Midnight too! But I haven’t given in on my book buying ban yet. I’m just entering every giveaway possible to hope I get a giftcard so I can get it lol. But I’m actually saving money which is great, because I there’s this concert I want to go to and I want to travel in the summer.

Shrill sounds pretty cool. Happy reading πŸ˜€

    • I’m only allowed to buy one book per week and it has to be a book that I really, really want. So far, so good. πŸ™‚ Good luck with your quest to win a copy!

  • Happy reading!
