One night with the wrong woman can change your life….

Jack Simon’s road to the White House has been a smooth one until a night with the notorious Donovan James becomes a roadblock he can’t escape. Suddenly he’s America’s number one story and it has nothing to do with politics. Jack’s tangled with this woman before and knows they’re no good together because the only thing they’re good for is a four letter word…hurt. He should get on with his life and concentrate on his job. But that’s hard to do when the one thing standing in his way, is the one thing he wants the most…

Donovan James, international singing sensation, has made a living singing songs about heartache and pain, two things she grew up on. But it’s time to set down some roots and the only man she wants is a man she’s all wrong for. A man she’s never stopped loving—Jack Simon. They’d had it all once, until they didn’t. And yet she can’t help but wonder if a second shot together just might be the game changer she needs. Or if old secrets can still ruin the only man she’s ever loved…

If there’s one thing I can’t get enough of in romance books (plot-wise), it is the forbidden element of a politician and a character with a shady past. This book featured a Democrat senator well on his way to a presidential nomination and a country singer who may or may not be involved in a scandal that will prove disastrous for Jack Simon. And because she loves him dearly, she’ll do anything to prevent that from coming out.

Jack Simon and Donovan James has had a tumultuous, albeit, brief past together. Their fights were epic, but the making up was just as explosive. Jack never figured out why Donovan just up and left him years ago. Because of that, he’s considered Donovan as an unfinished business, and someone he hated and loved in the same breath.

When Jack’s sister conspired to leave them stranded in an island in Belize, they have no choice but to face the the past that have haunted them for years. Or at least, confront their feelings for each other. Either way, Jack is determined to get the answers that Donovan hid from him. Because then maybe, just maybe he’ll finally be able to move on after all these years.

If I had to choose, I have to say that Jack is my favourite Simon. I may have a thing for politicians (has to have a Liberal platform, though). I love the palpable chemistry between him and Donovan. They both knew they were one fight away from a romp in the bedroom so they’ll try to get into each other’s nerves. They just can’t help themselves.

There were times though, when I want to strangle Jack. He could be an unbearable ass, and poor Donovan – a feisty character herself – couldn’t really tell him what she was hiding at first. Which was frustrating at times. I was a little disappointed with how little grovelling Jack did at the end though. I wanted him to suffer just a bit more than he deserves.

I’m really glad I re-discovered Juliana Stone’s Simon Family series. Nowadays, I’m always on the look out for easy, fun reads. The type that makes me feel more than it makes me think. Her books are the perfect prescription if you’re in need of a reprieve from back-breaking reads.

  • This sounds great. I need to find time to read a good M/M romance again.

  • I got Tucker based on your recommendation. This one sounds good too. Need to find time to read Tucker before I tackle this one but it’s definitely going on the list. Thanks!

  • Aw, yay 😀 So glad you read and loved this one Joy. <3 Sounds amazing. But not for me, as you know, lol 😀 ONE DAY I will want to read books like this. Hmph. I hope 🙂 You make it seem awesome. <3

  • Sounds like I would enjoy the arguments between the characters. I feel like that is the ultimate chemistry you want to see in a book. Thanks for the great review 😉

  • Oh man NOTHING is better than a forbidden romance with a politicians… I don’t know why but they make the best romance characters, I agree. It sounds like Donovan has a rough past and I really want to find out why. Thanks for sharing, Joy! This is the first I’m hearing of the series. 🙂

  • Ah I like the ‘books that make you feel…’ thing. I’ve been reading what I consider my easy books lately, but they really just give me warm fuzzies and smiles 🙂 I might have to check out this series, it sounds like it’s my kind of thing. Thank you for sharing!

  • This one sounds fun! I think this will be my next read 🙂

  • Books that make you feel more than make you think… interesting! I definitely feel you though – too many complex reads and your brain becomes goo more sooner than later 😉 Will have to check this out!

  • so far the last two books that I read is a flop. I am now seriously considering reading this series, I need something light after major disappointments blah

” I was a little disappointed with how little grovelling Jack did at the
end though. I wanted him to suffer just a bit more than he deserves.”

Heh. You sound like me Joy! I tend to hold a bit of a character grudge as well, and I hold it meanly until the appropriate groveling has taken place. I feel like I’m going to need a bit more from Jack as well, but otherwise this sounds like a great read:)

  • Melliane

It’s great that se cond book was like that too! i need to try this author!!! soon!!!

  • Hehehe! This sounds like a fun read! I like how you think they are one fight from hitting the sheets! Love it!

  • This sounds fabulous! I’ll have to start this. Pretty cover, too. 😉

  • She’s a great pick me-upper. Gotta start this series soon!

  • I’ve never seen a female ‘Donovan’ before, it’s very Bold and The Beautiful let’s use male names for females super exotic. I’m a bit fan of the forbidden romance too! It’s a little bit sexy, a little bit naughty and you just know you’re in for a fun read. Awesome review Joy, it’s nice when you can go back and rediscover old authors again <3

  • RO

When I saw that you gave a rating of 4, I knew it had to be a goody! I like the plot of this love story because it has some history and shadiness going on to make it interesting. Loved your review. Hugs…Ro

  • Fun and easy sounds great esp Jack– just like a man to love and want to strangle

  • Ooh I like the sound of this one. I don’t read too many books which include politics but if they are done well I am quickly discovering that I really enjoy them! This sounds like the past has a big situation in it and from the way you wrote this review I want to know what it is!

  • Maybe one day

  • kindlemom1

I like the sounds of Jack, wanting to strangle him and all. 😉

  • Jazmen

These books sound kind of fun but I’m not like into politics or anything. I’d have to ponder on this!

  • I must admit that I have a thing for forbidden love in books as a general. ;] Great review! 🙂

  • I have to admit romance mixed with possibility of political scandals are my guilty pleasure (hence my love for TV shows like The Good Wife and Scandal) – thus this book sounds fantastic! haha.
