Photo Vomit [24]: Skittles

DSC00429I’ve wanted to re-arrange my books according to colour for a long time now. I just couldn’t do it to the library I have in the city because there are a lot of serial books over there. Then two weeks ago, I was bored out of my wits.

There was no internet. The cell reception was spotty at best. It was the long weekend, and the kids were whining as per usual. So I recruited them to help me re-arrange the books in the cabin according to colour.

The shelves look pretty. But finding books is not that easy anymore. Who knows. Maybe one of these days, I’ll re-shelve them alphabetically. Which, if you think about it, is a waste of time. Because if you’re bored enough to re-arrange your shelves, you’re bored enough to have the time to read.

What about you? Are you crazy enough to do this?

Oh, your shelves look gorgeous like that, Joy! πŸ™‚

  • SO SO SO PRETTY. #HOMEGOALS But how do you find books? HOWWWWW?? “Oh, wait, that one had a blue cover right? *heads over to the blue section* Oops, not here. Must be white? *goes to the white section* NOT HERE EITHERRRR. FAKKET!” Hahahahahahahahaha

    • I have a feeling that will be me in the near future. Lol.

  • Ohhhh Joy, those look adorable! I often thought about doing mine by colour too, but it’s just so. much. work. Unless I can borrow the kids? Just express post them over. Mine are sorted by size and the moment and I can’t find ANYTHING anyway, so might as well make them look pretty. Your bookshelves never cease to amaze me Joy, I could gaze at the all day <3

    • hahah! Sure. But you’ll have to keep them. No return, no exchange. LOL. Kidding aside, they did very well. πŸ™‚

  • Wow! I love how it all looks, but how do you find anything?? Until the next change…

    Naomi @ Naomi’s Reading Palace

    • Ha! I’ll be okay as long as I resist the inclination to re read them as most of these books have been read already. πŸ™‚

  • I don’t know about you, my dear, but I like your shelves very very very much. I feel like I’m already looking at a rainbow, books-version :3 It’s so picturesque :(( It’s like looking at a post card with the picture of the perfect European village – that’s exactly the feels I get from your pictures <3

    Faye at The Social Potato

    • Aw. You’re much too kind! Thanks, Faye. <3

  • If I ever get the chance to visit you in person, I think I’ll just spend hours looking at your bookshelf. πŸ˜› I love that ladder!!

    • Thanks! You have an open invitation! πŸ˜€

  • EVERYTHING you do is fucking goals woman! The wanna-be interior designer in me, is obsessed with your homes! I absolutely love your style, and everything just always looks so PRISTINE. I’m forever switching up my shelf, so I’m sure the rainbow look wouldn’t last long. I have this weird habit of constantly changing things lol

    • Aw. Thanks, Tika. πŸ™‚ I can’t function in a cluttered house, so during the day (and night), I’m picking up stuff so they don’t accumulate. Otherwise, I’m stressed out if I have to see my house in shambles.

  • Golly, Joy! You have this many books just in your CABIN? That is both awesome and terrifying. You must have a heck of a lot of books.
I rainbowify my shelves, too! At least with my standalones. It’s such a great way of seeing all the books you own, too, getting them all out and sorting them into colour coded piles. I really love doing it, and actually I don’t have a problem finding a book. I recognise them by their spine colour, so it’s pretty easy for me to know where a certain read is!

    • To be honest, I didn’t think how much until we started pulling them off the shelves. And I wish I’d thought about doing that: just skittles-shelving the standalones. Now, the serial books are all over the place.

  • Oh ma gosh! Look at that! Wow! Good job to you and the kids. I’d love to do that someday.

    • Thanks, Shane! The kids were a great help. Hubby, too. πŸ™‚

  • Ah, I love this πŸ˜€ You are so awesome Joy. <3 I would never be able to do this, lol. Mostly because I don't have my shelves right next to each other like you do :p and I would never be able to have the books so far away from each other, lol. But yours looks so so pretty πŸ˜€ Thank you for sharing. <3

    • Your shelves are just as spectacular, C! And yes, it’s hard to separate the series, but these books are mostly read so it’s not that bad. πŸ™‚

  • So in love with your organized bookshelves! <3 I wish I had THAT many books to organize into skittles.

    • Thank you, Dre. This is years of hoarding in the making. So be thankful that you’ve not spent this much money in books. :/

  • How many books do you own? Do you have a running count?

  • wow, that is quiet colorful heh

  • if these are your shelves in your cabin, I can’t imagine what you have in your home! This is wonderful, but you are right, I wouldn’t be able to find anything. However, that being said, my shelves are pretty much a mess! Awesome pictures as usual πŸ™‚

    • Thank you, Lorna! I was staring at these very shelves yesterday and couldn’t help but cringe because I see my serial books spread about randomly. Gah.

  • Your shelves are beautiful πŸ™‚ I don’t think I could handle colour coded shelves myself, but they do look impressive!

Most people see mine and wonder how I find anything (series aren’t together, there’s double/triple/quadruple shelving going on, books are shoved in on angles, spines not necessarily facing out, wherever they will fit!) but it’s amazing what you get used to πŸ˜‰

    • Thank you! Trust me, I’m re-thinking this strategy already. Actually, it’s really not all bad considering these shelves are mostly read books that I don’t think I’ll be re-reading in the near future. Ah yes. Multiple stacks. I’ve got them too.

  • OH MY GOD THIS IS SO STUNNING. I am all sorts of envious, this is some magazine worthy shelving you have there. Well done to you and the kids!

    • Thank you! At least I found a way to keep them occupied for the better part of the day. Lol.

  • Melliane

oh yes your shelves are really pretty, mine aren’t like that lol at all

    • Thanks, Melliane. I might be one of the crazy ones who would do such a thing. Lol.

    • Thanks, Jeann. <3 Yours are lovely as well. πŸ™‚

  • Oh lordy, Joy, ar you going to re-arrange them a new way every time you get bored? That’s funny. The colors look cool though.

    • Maybe….I don’t know. Not just yet. They look too pretty. πŸ™‚

  • Jazmen

I don’t have bookshelves, so I’ll just go find a corner to cry in. But if I had one I’d try that for a little while.

  • Holy gorgeous!!

  • shootingstarsmag

So so pretty. I don’t have the focus to do this, no. haha I also don’t have enough room to make it look nice, all next to each other and whatnot.

    • It took hours and a few more whining from the kids. πŸ™‚

  • Omg pretty!

  • Ack, I love the rainbow of books!! LOVE IT JOY!! I wish I could do this to my shelves as well, but I can’t seem to make myself stop shelving them alphabetically. πŸ™

    • Now, I’m jealous. I want to to that to my library in the city!

  • Aerykah B

    Your bookshelves are lovely!! πŸ™‚
If anyone in my family was crazy enough to try to organize the books by color… it would be me. Lol! However, I just can’t bring myself to do that. I really prefer books to not be organized this way– I think it’s partly because if someone put a book back in the totally wrong place, it would be glaringly obvious and would drive me crazy. And I also would never be satisfied with the arrangement so I would be constantly tweaking it. ;P
My bookshelves are organized first, according to “have-read” and “to-read”; second, according to old (mainly old hardbacks) and new; third, alphabetically according to author; and forth, according to series. To some it may not look organized, but if a book is out of place, I know it! πŸ˜‰

    • Thankfully, I had a couple of bored kids to help me so it wasn’t so bad. These books are mostly read and would probably not going to be re-read in the future, so trying to find a certain book will not be problem. I do want to arrange them alphabetically in the future, though. πŸ™‚

  • Ksenia

Wow, I love this final look. Gorgeous.
Though I’m afraid I’m not going to do it with my bookshelves, since I like when
I can easily find a book.

    • Thanks, hun! Yeah, it’s not easy to find books, but I’ve read most these books so I don’t think I’ll be frantically looking for a certain title anytime soon. πŸ™‚

  • Your shelf is so beautiful! I am in tears!

  • kindlemom1

I love the way it looks! I have never done this but now I want to!

    • Thanks, Ali! Definitely do it with books that you’ve already read.

  • i LOVE the look of color coding books, but i like to find my books quickly so i feel like this could never do for me. πŸ™ but it looks stunning!!!

  • Um – this needs to be in a magazine layout!! Wow, I love this – makes me want to sit down and pull a random book to read the day away. Sometimes its nice to admire the covers this way. I’m glad you and kids had fun (hard work too) making this project happen!
Simply lovely – hope you have a terrific weekend, Joy!! πŸ™‚

    • Thanks, Kim. We did have fun…after a few cajoling that is. Lol. Aw and you’re too nice. <3

  • Jenny @ Supernatural Snark

THOSE ARE YOUR BOOKSHELVES?! *dies of jealousy* They do look absolutely stunning organized by color, but I can see how it might make finding a particular book harder. You’d have to remember what the spine looked like πŸ˜‰ So, so pretty Joy, amazing job!

    • Thanks, Jenny! Thankfully, the books I have in the cabin are books that I’ve already read and would most likely not read again, so it probably would be a non-issue. πŸ™‚

  • *intense shelf envy*
It looks really gorgeous and neat arranged that way but I can imagine how difficult it is to actually find specific books. I’m not much of an organizer (I know I fail as a bookworm). On my bookshelf at home, I would just shove books randomly. Haha! I don’t have the patience to re-arrange them!

    • Oh I know! You should see my library in my basement. No rhyme or reason whatsoever. Sigh. And thank you, Nick! <3

  • Ahaha I love this! To be honest when I remember a book I remember the colour and the title mostly, and sometimes the author. Which is why having my shelves colour organised is good for me because I immediately remember what colour it is. But it does look beautiful if anything else <3 I can't imagine the time it must have taken!

    • Thanks, Olivia. It took hours, but we had fun. πŸ™‚
