I never know what to write when I do my book haul posts. My life is pretty much the usual thing day in and day out, unless something huge happ…Oh. Oh. Oh.

This book. I don’t know if y’all remember, but about a year ago, I was contacted by Bruce of Silent Noise Publishing to see if I wanted to contribute some of my poetry in an anthology they were going to publish. The book is called, A Literary Assault on the American Mind [An anthology about the American Experience]. Well, it’s here! The feeling is so surreal. Four of my poems are included in this book among a whole slew of talented poets. It is now available for purchase, so I guess that’s huge, eh? I’ll be doing a post to promote this sometime next week.

Back to my book haul, I received four books for review this week: one from Simon & Schuster Canada (Stand-Off by Andrew Smith) and three from Random House Publishing Canada (The Dust that Falls from Dreams, Villa America, and Long Change). Thank you, thank you, thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

Because I decided to read the Burying Water series, I picked up Becoming Rain and Chasing River this week. I started Rain, but it’s going slow for me right now. I’ll push forward though, as I’ve been told it’s as good as Water. I also picked up a few books from the clearance section of my bookstore (One Plus One Equals Blue, Out of Nowhere, and In the Shadows of Blackbirds). I have a feeling I’m missing a book somewhere, but I can’t figure out what it is. Oh well.

Leave me a link to your post and I’ll come visit you! I hope you’re all having a fantastic weekend!

  • Stand Off sounds like a great pick. Hope you enjoy your books and this week!

  • Hey, congratulations on getting some of your poems published. That’s pretty damn awesome. Are you a regular writer of poetry?
I know this isn’t particularly poignant, but I wanted to point out that if you removed the commas between the book titles, the ones from the clearance bin, it sounds like one very long title. Although I must admit it becomes rather surreal at that point.
(In the shadows of blackbirds one plus one equals blue out of nowhere.)

  • Congratulations Joy on having your poems published – wow, the book is gorgeous!! It looks like you have a great book haul – I would love to read IN THE SHADOW OF BLACKBIRDS – perfect for fall 🙂

  • That is absolutely AMAZING Joy! Congratulations! I’ll have to hunt down a copy to see your lovely words. When I was a teen, I had a poem published in something similar too, it was an anthology of Aussie poets of the century and was absolutely beside myself as well. It’s an incredible feeling isn’t it. Ohhh, I can’t wait to grab a copy! Are they available online anywhere yet?

  • Oh my goodness, what an incredible (if slightly surreal) thing to see your poetry published! A huge, huge congratulations – I’ll be picking up the anthology ASAP. <3

  • Congratulations Joy-Lie, that’s such an amazing accomplishment! (I have a weird habit of giving people nicknames. Just go with the flow lol) YO, I heard In The Shadows Of Blackbirds was CRAZY GOOD. I haven’t gotten around to picking it up yet, so get to reading it lady so I can really see how great it is lol. We spoke on instagram about how I feel about Winger, so Andrew better not let me down with Stand Off. Seriously, if this book doesn’t own up to my expectations, I WILL demote him as one of my fave authors . . . okay I’m lying but you get what I’m saying!

  • Wow, wow, wow! Congratulations on getting your poems published, Joy.
