On the Night Table [20]: Gone Fishing

DSC00228

Hello, dear readers!

As some of you may know, I will be on holidays this week. Which means, I may be off the grid for the next 7 days. The internet reception at the cabin is spotty at best, so I might not be able to visit you. I will try my best, anyhow.

This week’s reading pile might just be a bit ambitious, but not because of the books featured above. I’ll get to that in a bit. I have one book for review (I Saw A Man by Owen Sheers) and a couple of books that I wanted to read just because. Since I will not be doing much on my holidays (besides read), I thought this is the perfect opportunity to tackle a book that I’ve always wanted to read but couldn’t get to.

This behemoth clocks in at 861 pages. I’m going to finally attempt to read this since it’s been sitting in my shelves for years now. I had a choice between this one and starting the Harry Potter series. But I decided to read the HP books with my son. Wish me luck!

Gosh, I’ve read quite a few books this week. I discovered Penny Reid through This Girl Reads A Lot’s blog. I was hooked, and couldn’t stop downloading her books. Needless to say, I’ve been spending a few bucks on her this week. Lol. The rest of the books off my TBR are as follows:

  • China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan
  • Elements of Chemistry by Penny Reid
  • Neanderthal Seeks Human [Knitting in the City, #1] by Penny Reid
  • Friends Without Benefits [Knitting in the City, #3] by Penny Reid
  • The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George
  • The Beauty and the Moustache by Penny Reid
I hope you’ll all have a great week! Happy reading.

  • I just can’t read a book that big anymore, although I used to all the time back in my younger days. Hope you enjoy it and your holiday as well πŸ™‚ I have been trying to go on vacation since May but because of illness have been unable-I am determined to go in July though! Have fun!

    • I have read a few this year, but it’s with the aid of an audio book. Bronze Horseman, however doesn’t come in that edition. So boo. I have to read them the old fashion way. Lol.

  • I just started my first Penny Reid book this week! I’m reading Friends Without Benefits. I know, I’m living life on the edge by starting with the second book in the series…. whoops.
And The Bronze Horseman looks so great, but its size is definitely a bit intimidating. I hope you get a lot of reading done! Enjoy your holiday πŸ™‚

    • Oh you must read her Elements of Chemistry! So good. πŸ™‚

  • ohmy, 861 pages… Good luck with that! I’m not really a huge fan of thick books. I easily get overwhelmed with the huge number of pages..

    • Thanks! As of this writing, I have not crack open the pages. Lol.

  • RO

I think cabins are the perfect retreat for reading and relaxing so kudos to you! I enjoy books that have a lot more to read, but 861 pages is a whopper for sure, and can’t wait to hear your thoughts. HUGE Hugs…Ro

    • Thanks, Ro. I do love my cabin. But the lack of internet connection is a huge negative for me. Lol.

  • Have a great holiday and enjoy your reading!

  • Whew! That is a big book! I did that last year with Outlander, and dedicated myself to reading it over vacation. It worked for me, so I hope it works for you as well! I hope you have a restful holiday, Joy!

    • I couldn’t even get past chapter 1 of Outlander. The script is so tiny! Lol. Thanks, Rachel!

  • I just checked out an 880 page from the library last week – Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. It sounds amazing, but it will probably take me at least a week of dedicated reading to get through.

I’ve heard of China Rich Girlfriend through the Lainey Gossip blog. Are you familiar with that? I love her site. It’s smart celebrity gossip.

    Enjoy your holidays!

    • Seveneves is ginormous, too. I have that in my TBR for weeks now. I’m familiar with Lainey Gossip, but haven’t checked out her blog/website yet. I think she has a morning show here in Canada. πŸ™‚

  • The Bronze Horseman has been on my TBR pile for a while but itΒ΄s a really big book and so far I havenΒ΄t read it. IΒ΄ll be waiting your review of that book.
    Happy reading and holidays. πŸ™‚

  • Hope you have fun at the cabin πŸ™‚ Finding Adurey sounds really good too, I have a copy of it hidden in my bookshelf now.

    • Lol. I have the same problem. πŸ™‚ Thanks, Banish!

  • Yowsers 861 is quite a big one

  • Picturing you cozied up reading in the cabin. Hope you’re having a wonderful time!

  • Have fun! I’ve always wanted to read something by Paulina Simons but the sheer size of that book, haha.

    • Right? It’s ginormous! And thanks, Alise!

  • Lauren Becker

Hope you have a nice vacation and get lots of reading done! Good luck with the book too. There are many books I’d like to read but they are SO long, I just never find a good time.

  • Wow, 861 pages! That is definitely a monster of a book:) Enjoy your time off Joy, I’m super jealous! Our 4th of July vacation got postponed due to my husband’s work, so now I have to wait until Labor Day. *sobs* Have the best time at your cabin!

    • Thanks, Jenny! I hope you’ll enjoy your vacation (whenever that may be).

  • Happy reading πŸ˜€

  • Hey, Joy! So glad you are devouring Penny Reid!!! She is one of my must read authors, since I read her Neanderthal Seeks Human in 2013 πŸ™‚ Beauty and The Mustache is perhaps my favborite. Also she has The Hooker And The Hermit with L.H.Cosway as a co author. Have a lovely holiday, my dear xxx

    • Ack. Why haven’t I read her books before? I’m sure you’ve reviewed them on your blog. Regardless, her books are amazing!

  • Enjoy your break, and your reads… 800+ pages… goodluck!

  • Ooh, fun holidaying at your cabin! Nice! I’m actually going away for around 2 weeks on Friday and I have to make up my tbr pile. We have no internet at our beach house (which we’re going to in… Winter? I come up with odd ideas!) so it really will just be trying to stay warm and getting through a mass of books. So fun! I hope you go better with Extraordinary Means than I did. xx

  • I only know about the first one but I’m curious to see what you think of them. happy reading lady and have a nice week!
