Friday Finds [#6]: On a Mission

I have an obsessive personality. As in, I tend to give tenacious focus on things that I love. Kings of Leon. Shoes. Purses. Oh and books. This obsession with J.D. Robb is mind-boggling, however. I haven’t read anything written by Nora Roberts (JD Robb and Nora Roberts are one and the same). So I have no idea why I’ve been scouring the second-hand bookshops for these books. Never mind that there’s 41 books in this series so far.

The first book in this series was published back in 1995. Back then, I was obsessed with Harlequin Romance, and the concept of buying new books was a fantasy I didn’t indulge in often. What are the odds that I can find the earlier books to this series? Especially if I want to collect them in hardbacks? As it stands, I own 9. But these were more recently published, mostly bought at Goodwill, Vallue Village, and a couple that were picked up at a clearance.

The funny thing is, I have no intention of starting this series until I find the first book. And for some reason, I’m stubbornly set on not buying them new. I’m quirky like that. At this rate, when do you think I’ll be able to start them?

  • Naomi @ Nomi’s Paranormal Palace

I’m sure it will turn up when you least expect it Joy. Goodluck hunting!

  • I think this is an awesome goal – I love collecting hardbacks of books, and the harder to find, the more satisfying it is to complete your collection. Have you tried AbeBooks, Amazon and Ebay for used copies? They have a pretty good selection of used books from bookstores all over the world. Of course it’s always more fun to browse and find them like a needle in a bookish haystack in person. 🙂

    • I’ve tried Amazon, The Book Depo and Book Outlet. They’re a bit expensive. Even more than the original price. I’ve yet to try AbeBooks, though. I think I’m going there next.

      Thanks, Lauren!

  • RO

Okie dokie: I was able to locate Indulgence in Death, Fantasy in Death and Treachery in Death. If you’re interested, shoot me an e-mail so I can get them mailed tp you. Hugs, Ro

    • Got your email, Ro! Thanks so much. 🙂

  • lornak99

I have actually read all but the last 3 or 4 I think. I love this whole series. As far as collecting the books, I went to a lot of used book stores to get mine. But then, I wasn’t buying them in hardback. And you have to read book 1-it sets up the whole series, romance, continuing characters etc. When I moved out of state a few years ago-I got rid of all of mine. Wish I hadn’t had to do that!

    • Aw. Lucky you! I have a long ways away to catch up.

  • Ack!!!! Wheeee!! I’m also going to start her In Death series too, sometime soon. I already have a digital copy I bought from Amazon on my Kindle! Since there are so many books, and that it has been a while since the first hardbacks have been published, I’ll be settling for the digital ones. PLUS SO MANY! I hope you get the first book, Joy!

    Faye at The Social Potato

    • Thanks, Faye. I hope you’ll enjoy this series!

  • Hmm, have you checked ebay or amazon used?

  • RO

We sound very similar! Once I find an author I like, I MUST own everything he or she has ever written! (lol)Very expensive AND time consuming obsession. Ironically, I help out occasionally at a consignment store and my job is to organize the books because the owner isn’t a reader. How about there are several JD Robb books there calling your name. I’ll check out the titles tomorrow and will let you know. The book fairy wants to help your cause. (lol) Hugs…Ro

    • Aw. thanks so much, Ro. You’re awesome, honest. <3

  • OMG 41 books in a series?! I don’t think I can handle that much time investment haha, kudos to you Joy. Maybe give Amazon a go? They tend to have a lot of second hand books for sale 🙂

  • lol. Best of luck finding them all Joy 😀 I’m sure you can do it. <3 But ack. You don't want them new? Hmm. That might be difficult, lol 🙂 I couldn't read used books :p But ack. Those spines are pretty gorgeous looking 😀 I hope you'll find all the books sweetie 🙂 Thank you for sharing about it. <3 You are awesome 😉

  • And I thought series with 7 books in is already tiresome! I heard about this series but I was never interested with it for some reason…I have read a few Nora Roberts though and although I was never a big fan, I’ve enjoyed some of her older books. I admire that you’re collecting them all even if you haven’t read them yet because 41 books. WHOA. And maybe you’ll get book 1 in The book depository or Or do you want to find them all without the help of the internet? Either way, good luck! I think you’re going to need it 😛 Haha, just kidding.

    • I’m trying different avenues. So far, I’ve been lucky with Value Village.

  • 41 books?! That’s crazy, Joy. 😉 At that rate, I don’t know if you’ll ever find the first book, haha! But good luck with that. Pray to the book gods. 😉

    • Looks like I’d have to make another goat sacrifice. Lol.

  • That is a lot of books for the series. I used to collect series I know I wanted to read, but then it would be disappointing when I read the first book and realised I wasn’t a big fan (eg. City of Bones). I’ve found hard to find books on fishpond, not sure if that helps or if you have one there.

    • There is that. I’m really hoping for the best, though.

  • Wow 41 books! I would never be able to read that many.. Good luck reading 🙂

  • Well.. I say DON’T start the series until you find the first book! I’m like that too. What’s the point of reading it if you don’t have the starting point A.K.A. the first book?

    • Yes. Otherwise, I’ll probably be lost. Lol.

  • Can you not find it through B&N or Amazon? I don’t know if that’s a stupid question and I should assume you looked their already or you prefer to search in brick and mortar stores. Anyway, If anyone can find them, it will be you! Best of luck!

    • I looked in Amazon and some of the books cost just as much , if not more, than the new ones. Crazy!

  • Maja (The Nocturnal Library)

It’s almost impossible to find the first book in hardback! At least for us INT folks! I tried too, I even tried Better World Books, but no luck! I think there were some super cheap copies on Amazon, though, used of course, so perhaps start there. You should definitely put more effort into it and read the series because it’s awesome. Let me know if you find them somewhere. I’m looking too. (Forgot to check Abe books, since I’m an idiot. Off to do that now)

    • I haven’t really tried any other sources. I tried Book Outlet, no dice. But thanks for the suggestions! I’m so jealous you’re caught up with this series!

  • The In Death series is a MUST read Roarke is just..*sigh* Yummy!

I have all the books (and novellas!) as well but I’m only on book ten I think. I have a long way to go reading wise!

    • I wish I’d found these books years ago. Late to the party again!

  • Haha! I hope you’re able to find these books soon! But 41 though! You’re a little crazy, you know! 😉

  • I read book 1, luckily for me it was good, but not good enough 😉

    • Aw. I hope I’ll like it, anyway. 🙂

  • It’s always so nice when we find a series like that!

    • Yes, though it’s tough to find as the series is quite old.
