On the Night Table [13]: Housekeeping

Another work week is upon us! I wish I can say that I’m excited about this, but any week that I’m forced to work rather than read is not a good week at all.  Sigh. Unfortunately, I have to play the adult role and fulfill obligations and such. Yep. It sucks being a responsible adult.

This week, I thought I’d try and finish some books that I’ve started a couple of weeks ago. Sort of a housekeeping before I can move on to my  pile of ARCs for May. I’ve started reading The Shadows a couple of weeks ago, and because this book is massive (576 pages), I used my Audible credit to download a copy on audio. I’ve been listening to it at work, and have been reading it simultaneously from time to time. I wish I can say something positive about this book, but unfortunately, this was a non-consequential instalment (relative to the series, that is).  The good news is, I’ve got about a quarter left. Yay.

The Fearless by Emma Pass is a stand-alone post apocalyptic novel set in UK. Basically, it’s what happens when a serum used to treat soldiers with PTSD becomes an unforeseen nightmare. I say, if you’ve read a zombie novel in the past, then you will have an idea on what this story is about. It is sort of similar. Only, there’s a semblance of intelligence left to those who were afflicted. I’m liking what I’m reading so far (I’m about halfway).

If I were really thinking ahead of this post, I should’ve had A Darker Shade of Magic instead of Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda pictured here. Can you believe that I can’t find my copy? I did some Spring cleaning over the weekend and have packed up some books to take to the cabin. I have a feeling my copy got lost in the shuffle. Now I have to wait until the weekend to dig it out.

For the last two weeks, I’ve been ensconced in Kate Perry’s world. I managed to finish off her Summerhill series, and currently working my way through Laurel Heights. Her books are fun, sweet, romantic and with very little angst to speak of. I really enjoy being a curious bystander to her stories, not to mention they’re fast reads. One of these days, I’m going to sit down and write an actual review for these books. They need more love!

This is my plan for the week. What’s yours?

  • Yup, the struggle is real when it comes to work and being forced to be an adult. I LOVED SIMONS SO MUCH And I hope you did too Joy! Fearless had an interesting concept, but there wasn’t enough world building for me.

  • The Fearless is great, I wish it had a follow up!

I haven’t read a Kate Perry book, but I’m glad you are enjoying them.

See, you should have them on an e-reader, then you wouldn’t have lost it. 😛 Being and adult with obligations seriously stinks.

    • So true. Better for the environment too! 🙂

  • Oooh, I hope you love Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda! It was such a lovely read. The more I think about it, the more I doubt my given rating (3-3.5 stars). Deserves so much more, I think. Anyway, happy reading!

    • Don’t you hate that? I sometimes feel like that on some books. Much as I feel I was overgenerous on some. Lol.

  • Ack, you read so much. <3 Have fun this week Joy 😀 But aw, damn the job, lol 🙂 I'm sure you'll still be able to read lots. <3 Yay for Simon 🙂 I'm curious to know what you think of this book. Happy reading sweetie. <3 Aaaalso. YOU MUST FIND THE MISSING BOOK. AAAACK. Because it is so good and I need you to read it 😀

    • Yes. Yes, I know. I think I’m just going to bite the bullet and pick up another copy. Bah.

  • Well of course now I’m stuck singing about being a Firework now and contemplating glasses. Yes, you must review them even if she isn’t Katy Perry. Apocalyptic… Zombies? You certainly know how to.capture my attention Joy. I can’t recall having seen this one around but now I’ve convinced myself that I need it desperately. Damn, don’t you hate displacing books, I can’t tell you how many copies I’ve doubled up on because I’ve lost one or forgot I reordered it or just bought two copies and forgot. Fingers crossed that you’ll find it at the love shack on the weekend Joy <3

    • Lmao!!! Sorry. Trust me, I did the same when I first discovered her books. Ah but Fearless has no zombies. They’re still humanized, only with a bit more savagery.

  • Great post and haul Joy! Your reading motivation is getting me more into reading. Lately I’ve also been slacking off reading because of school and life, but it’s great seeing you try to fit it into your time.

    Happy Reading!

  • WHY MUST WE WORK FOR A LIVING! Oh yeah… books to buy, food to eat. ( ._.) You got a lot of books read the past two weeks! Sometimes I go on an author binge myself. I have yet to read anything by Kate Perry but I have heard so much about it. Everybody is also talking about how stellar ADSOM so I sincerely hope you find it this weeken!

    • Right? Sigh. Yesterday, I was telling my husband that every Monday morning, my first thought as I try to ignore the blaring alarm clock is I wish today was the first day of my retirement.

  • I haven’t heard of Kate Parry before, but I just added one of her books to my TBR – It’s the Laurel Heights series. I’m glad she doesn’t write much love angst in her books.

    • Yes. Because sometimes that’s all I need. Lol.

  • That’s an impressive number of books to be flying through! It speaks well for them that you’ve read them back to back and so quickly. I’m sorry The Shadows is rather disappointing for the series–hopefully the next book is better.

    • Hopefully. But then again, JR Ward knows how to hook me in, regardless of how blah her instalments have become over the years.

  • I love Black Dagger Brotherhood series, but the last book of the series that I read was Lover at Last, I still need to read The King, so I can read Shadows :(….but I´m eagerly waiting for Blood Kiss.

    • I’m excited for Blood Kiss, too! I feel like I need something new even though it’s from the same world.

  • I am not motivated to read the shadow. The last few installments disappointed me very much. I wish she’d jusT end it.

    • Yeah. After a while, the regurgitated plot starts to get to me.

  • I haven’t read anything by Perry but her writing sound well done, and something I could enjoy.

    • Especially recommended if you want something easy!

  • I’m really curious about The Fearless, so I can’t wait to see the rest of your thoughts on it. Also, after you review of Empire of Night, I was able to get a e-copy right away from my lovley library that I’m excited to get to. Hope you enjoy the rest of your reads 🙂

    • Thanks, Kim! I hope you’ll enjoy Empire of Night. *fingers crossed*

  • I can’t wait to read Simon VS, it’s was one of my most anticipated reads of this year, and it does help that everyone seems to love it! Okay, I just did a small scream that sounded like a cat was being strangled when you mentioned you’ve misplaced your copy of ADSOM. Find it girl and READ IT! lol.

    • IKR? *sobs* If not, I’ll pick up another copy.

  • RO

Love JR Ward’s work, but 576 pages sounds pretty massive. Sounds like you found the best way to get through it is to tag team on audio and book form. Never read Kate Perry’s work, but everyone seems to be raving about her writing style, so need to check her out. Hugs and Happy Monday!

    • Most of her books in this series is massive. I don’t particularly like big books because they take up a lot of time. Lol. I’ve been a big fan of JR Ward, so I have no choice but to read it. 🙂

  • I love that you found an author to love! I need to check her out, I think I have read something by her but it might be that I just grabbed a book instead of actually reading it, I do that way too often. I should be embarrassed about that. 😉

I hope you end up liking all your books and who knows, maybe the Ward book will pick up in the last little bit?

    • Kate Perry’s book are so easy to love. I hope you’ll check them out. 🙂

  • I really do hope you love Simon!! It’s such a cute and fluffy book! 🙂
And I’ve heard some pretty terrible things about Shadows, so I’m not surprised at all you didn’t like it.
    Happy reading!

    • Oh I know! He is adorable and very out there. I really like him. 🙂

  • J.R. Ward is supposed the be really good! Personally I haven’t read anything by him, but if you like ‘The Shadows’, maybe I should read it.

    • Well, I don’t know if JR Ward is your type of thing. But don’t let me stop you. She’s very romance/erotica-heavy.

  • Wow you’ve still been able to get through an incredible amount of books around work Joy, I wish I was as good as multi-tasking as you, I just end up being super tired from work that I just want to go to bed. I hope you end up finding your copy of A Darker Shade of Magic!

    • Well Kate Perry’s books are the type that only takes me an hour and a half to read, so it’s not that impossible. Seriously, if you’re looking for something fun, flirty, fast, check out her books!

  • I didn’t like Pass’ debut, but The Fearless sounds good, actually. You had me at zombies. I also received a copy of Shadows, but I’m not sure I’ll read it. I’m SO behind on the series and PNR just doesn’t work for me. We’ll see. Oh, and find Darker Shade! It’s brilliant.

    • I think I have her debut work sitting around somewhere. I have to check out your review of Acid and see if it’s worth checking out. And yeah, it’s hard to catch up if you’re behind. 🙁

  • Woah, so at first I thought that book said “Katy Perry” so after three double takes I found that it in fact wasn’t. O_o. Huh. And I have an Audible account but don’t like the fact that audiobooks are so dang expensive. Gah!

    • Hahah! you’re not the only one who thought that at first. 🙂 Right? I usually just wait for sales and of course my monthly credit to come through. 🙂

  • That does seem like a great plan for this week 😀
And I so hope you find shade of magic

  • I’m curious to see what you think of the books because I saw different reviews about them. Happy reading!
