[509]: Give a Little by Kate Perry

Phoenix Rising Enterprises | E-book from author
January 12th, 2015
Series: Summerhill, #7
Adult Fiction | Romance
Rating: 2 out of 5 Stars

Beatrice Summerhill lives for the thrill of seeking out cutting edge investments and risking it all. But when it comes to the matters of the heart, she only knows how to run. Run away, and keep her sanity intact. They say you always compare every man that comes your way from your own father. And with the late, Reginal Summerhill as the ideal, it’s no wonder Beatrice would run for the hills from every man that knocks on her door. Some are easy to shake off. But Luca is the exception.

Luca may be a successful Formula One race car driver; one who lives for the thrill of speed. But nothing can compare to the thrill of chasing one, Beatrice Summerhill. The woman is as slippery as an eel.  When he’s given the opportunity to give her the world, he asks for a week to convince her that he’s the only one she would ever need.

my thoughts

I am a huge fan of this author. It’s not often that I get the opportunity to read and review her books. When I was contacted by her publicist to  read this, I grabbed the chance even though I’ve not read any of the books from this series. Which is primarily why I didn’t really enjoy this. I didn’t have a rapport with Beatrice. None whatsoever. That’s not to say reading the rest of the books would’ve improved this rating drastically. Not even one bit.

My major misgiving with this book, is the fact that the story moved at a break-neck speed. It was almost like Kate rushed the plot, and couldn’t wait to get out of the Summerhill’s respective lives. I was also frustrated with Beatrice, and felt sorry for Luca. The man was persistent and irresistible, but Bea’s fear of trusting anyone was her downfall. Sometimes, her hang-ups didn’t even make sense anymore.  But I suppose it’s how it is when you’re finding ways to tuck tail and run.

Even if this book was a bit of a disappointment, it at least whet my appetite for everybody else’s stories. I just know that this series will be the source of a brand-new addiction, and I can’t wait to meet the rest of the Summerhills.

  • Naomi @ Nomi’s Paranormal Palace

A shame this one wasn’t as good as you hoped, and the plot seemed rushed. Hope the next book makes up for it!

  • Sounds like the plot rushing kind of left you behind, Joy! What a shame that it happened, but I’m glad you’re keen for the rest of the series. Also I’m probably not the first one to think it was actually Katy Perry lol. Great review!

  • Ah, it’s a shame that this one seemed to speed by so quickly. I don’t like a slow moving book, but it is important to find that balance in there somewhere. I hope you do like the series more when you start from the beginning!

  • Aw shucks, some characters in a series just don’t do well when they get their own book. You mentioned this author in a comment on my blog, and no, I’ve never read/heard anything about her. But I’m glad you want to venture and check out the rest of the books in the series. But this sounds really great, will definitely check this out. 😀

  • Christy

That stinks. I love this kind of dynamic – the guy that’s persistent to a resistant woman. 🙂

  • Oh bummer. Not all books by the same author will be a complete win and I can see why you’d have issues with Beatrice constantly pushing Luca away. That gets frustrating after a while. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series, Joy! Wonderful review. 🙂

  • Oh no, this sounds like it could have done with a bit more character development and much better pacing. Like the last comment, when a character has too many hang ups, the characters just becoming irritating and it creates too much excess drama. It’s more noticeable in shorter romances too. Sorry you couldn’t have enjoyed this more Joy, but at least it hasn’t turned you off to continue the series. Lovely review hun <3

  • Sometimes too many hang-ups too long just fizzle you out. I recently read a book that I thought I was going to love and ended up having absolutely no rapport with the heroine. I just could not get into the story no matter how much I tried. So, I’m sorry to hear it, but thanks for the honest and lovely review!

    Have a wonderful weekend 🙂

  • I am sorry this didn’t work out for you. It always kind of sucks when you dive into a book by your favorite author and don’t love it as much as you had hoped to. 🙁

I usually don’t like it when it seems like the plot is being rushed so that makes me sad.

I am glad to hear that you like the author, Joy! I’ve seen her books around many times but have never been sure if I wanted to give them a shot so knowing that you like her stuff makes me more inclined to do so!

  • Eeek.. I don’t like rushed endings as well, I think that’s a problem with a lot of new releases lately. Hope you next book is a hit for you 🙂

  • When I first saw the author I thought it said Katy Perry and thought, “oh she’s writing books now?” Lmao! It’s definitely frustrating when it feels like the author is rushing the book when it barely just began. I’m glad it has made you want to read the other books and that you still love the author. I am not all that forgiving a reader, lol, and need to work on it more!

  • I’m not a fan of rushed plots either. It was like the author was just writing for the sake of a deadline and all. 🙁 I want my read really satisfying. Anyway, great review!

    Marga @ Deadly Darlings

  • A rushed plot can always make or break a book, and in most instances it breaks lol. I’m not the biggest fan of the cat and mouse ordeal to be honest. I like it sometimes, but nine times out of ten, I’ll wind up irritated with the fact that the character is being stubborn or just dragging the other character along. Sorry you didn’t enjoy this, but atleast you still want to continue with the rest of the series 🙂

  • Oh damn, hate it when the plot seems so rushed! Never heard of this author before, but I’m not that curious after this review to be honest 😛 Love the honesty!

  • I’ve read a few of Kate Perry’s books before and while I enjoyed it I really wish you could have enjoyed this one more. it’s a shame this one didn’t live up to your usual expectations. Hopefully you enjoy your next read more.

  • I’m sorry that you weren’t able to enjoy this one as much as you’d hoped Joy, it does sound like it has a lot of potential and Luca sounds totally swoon worthy, but I can understand some of the gripes that you had with Beatrice’s character. I do hope the rest of the books work out for you!

  • I’m pretty sure I read a book by Kate Perry a while ago, and while I don’t remember the details, I remember liking it quite a bit. I can see why you would be frustrated by the heroine’s inability to trust, but at least you’re still interested in her books!

  • Ill be sure to skip this then. It sucks when a fave lets you down somewhat.

  • For a moment there I thought the author’s name was Katie Perry and I was like, “She writes books now?!” LOL. I’m sorry this was a disappointment for you…I know the feeling though, I was really disappointed with Rock Addiction by Nalini Singh. But I’m also open to reading the rest of the series, like you. Hopefully the next (or previous) book is really better!

  • It is so hard to read and review a book that is subpar from an author that you normally just love. I am so sorry this didn’t work out for you. Sometimes imperfect characters are lovable and sometimes they are just frustrating as all heck, sorry this was one of those moments.

  • Hm. It’s always challenging to really settle into a book when events are happening one after the other at breakneck speed. I always set those books aside feeling like I’ve run a marathon:) I’m glad that despite your issues with this story in particular, it made you want to spend more time with the other characters who have tales to tell:)

  • I’ve seen this author’s reviews all over the blogosphere! It’s a shame that this was a disappointment, but it happens! I’ll have to look more into the author’s books since you seem to enjoy most of them.
    Great review, Joy!

  • It’s always a sad feeling when one of your favorite writers created a book that is kind of a let down compared to the others, but I think there will always be that one black sheep book hehe 🙂 I think hers would be Give a Little. Don’t worry, I bet she’ll come around next book!

  • Gorgeous review Joy. <3 But aw. I love that you love this author 😀 Which is awesome. But yeah. I'm so sorry this book was disappointing :\ I do not like rushed books either. Sigh. And she is acting silly with the man? I do not approve, lol. Though, heh, Kate Perry. I keep thinking Katy Perry, and getting excited 😀 but not the same ;p Anyway. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about it sweetie. <3

  • Oh that’s really disappointing I hate when a series speeds on, it does flow properly and there really is no balance for the book. I’ve gone into the middle of the series before and it hasn’t been that bad but it also really sets my up for the rest of the series too. Although you didn’t have the best time with this novel, it’s still good to see you willing to give the others a try. Great honest review. 🙂

  • I really do not know…nope, nada

  • Ah yes sometimes it’s quite complicated to start a series in the middle like that… I’m sorry that despite you usually love the author you had a difficult time with this one.

    • Me too. On the other hand, I was able to fully appreciate the earlier instalments, so it’s not so bad. 🙂
