On the Night Table [5]: Determined

DSC_0805

Last weekend, as I was going through old posts on my blog, I stumbled upon this feature that I used to do. On the Night Table was  where I write a little about the books I intend to read for the week. I can’t believe I’d forgotten about it.  Well, I thought that I might as well start doing this one again.

As you can tell from my choices, two of these books are pretty old. Wicked is a new release. I know I’ve said in the past that I’ve not been such a trust worthy goal setter, but I’ve become a disciplined reader lately. I’m hoping I can keep at this for a while. Anyway, these are the books I want to read this week:

Determined to complete a goal.

This week, I want to finish off the last book on my winter reading list by reading Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald. Read the summary here.

Determined to start a series.

I’ve read so many outstanding reviews for Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Cycle. This week, I want to finally start them with The Raven Boys.

Determined to change my mind.

I’m sure a lot of you have read books by this famous author, Jennifer L. Armentrout. Well, I’ve had such a rough time jumping into the bandwagon. I thought that her newest one would be a great way to convince myself that she is as awesome as most of you have found. I’ve also promised myself that I will be giving more self-published books a chance. It just so happens that this book is one.

What are you reading this week?

  • I like these goals. I like the idea of finishing what you are reading and embarking on a new series. I really want the Raven Cycle as well but I went to the bookstore they only had the second and third in the series. Not the first :'( Maybe another time. I also heard great things about JLA but I have yet to try anything by her.

  • I really hope you like TRB! I know Stiefvater’s writing isn’t for everyone but I absolutely love it! And I still haven’t read anything by JLA. I need to make this like a 2015 resolution, this is getting ridiculous. This chick has written like a million books.

  • I always try to say what I’m reading each month but I always mange to read some random book in-between that wasn’t even on the list!!! I try to be organized..
I just started to read Wicked. I agree Jennifer Armentrout is a habitual writer but I was hoping for something more in that book. The beginning was’t all that interesting but, I’m getting towards the end and I’m kinda liking it. I’ve wanted to read the Raven boys but after barely making it through Maggie S. other book, I don’t know how I feel about her books anymore but, I hope you enjoy it!!!!!

I have the Raven Boys… i still need to read it! And I want Wicked! Argh!

  • Amazing post Joy. <3 And yay for finally trying to start The Raven Boys 😀 I really hope you will do so. <3 And that you will love it to pieces, like I do. Best of luck 😀 GANSEY! <3 Anyway. Happy reading sweetie. <3

  • Yes you HAVE to be determined to start the Raven Boys, AND of course finish it, which I have no doubt you will be able to do. Also, I haven’t read anything by Jennifer Armentrout, so I can’t say anything about that.

  • Is it bad that I’ve just decided I’ll never read Jennifer L. Armentrout? It’s a weird stubbornness. 🙂 If Wicked isn’t for you, you can just join me in that!

Ooh, yay for starting The Raven Cycle!! I’ve got all my fingers and toes crossed that you’ll love it.

    • Is it weird that I feel exactly the same until I decided to give her Wicked a chance? I just finished it, I’m afraid I’m still not convinced. Lol.

  • I feel you. I’ve read a couple books by the author but I’ve never been as amazed by them as the rest of the population seems to be! I hope you enjoy Wicked though! 😀

THE RAVEN BOYS. Godsdangit. That HC cover is GORGEOUS. I have the UK paperback and I so badly want the US hardcover edition (plus my copy of the 2nd book is a US hardback so it would make my collection a little more complete?). I hope you’ll enjoy it, Joy! I REALLY DO. It’s a little slow so be warned but it’s worth it! 😀

    • I’m about ten chapters in to The Raven Boys, and I must say I’m enjoying it. 🙂

  • I’ve actually just started The Raven Boys this week too, have had it sitting on my shelves in what seems like forever. I keep putting off starting the series mainly due to how much hype surrounds it, which is usually the quickest way to kill the experience for me. So far it’s not too bad, but there a lot of urban legends in there and the male characters aren’t really all that distinguishable yet, so it’s a little confusing. Only three or four chapters in though, so I expect it to pick up soon. Fingers crossed. Can’t wait to see if it lives up to your expectations as well Joy <3

    • You know what’s weird? I really like that it’s from male perspectives, but I agree. I can’t tell them apart. I’m liking the legends, though. 🙂

  • First of all… WICKED! I’m so excited to see you trying this one. I don’t have a copy yet (since I put a buying ban on myself until after the holidays) but I DEFINITELY hope to get a copy soon. Also I did read The Raven Boys when it first came out and wasn’t a fan (Totally in the minority here!) and I’ve always wanted to give it another chance. I went the audio route, and I wasn’t a fan of the narrator AT ALL! I know others have liked me, but I despised him. He just sounded too old and weird… I just couldn’t get past it. Anyway, I’m looking forward to your thoughts. I’m considering re-reading it some time in the future. 🙂

    • So true! Gansey seems totally older for his age. But it’s kinda refreshing. 🙂

  • What a cool little feature! I haven’t read any JA books but I have read and enjoyed Maggie a bunch. I think I will read her latest Raven Cycle book this week. I am also halfway thru Tainted Blood by M.L. Brennan. As for what else, maybe I will finish A natural History of Dragons, perhaps read Made For You or Artemis Awakening. I am pretty behind on all my review books from 2014. I think I’ll read Witches of Echo Park…so I can get ahead. I have the week off so I’m thinking I’ll be able to read a book a day.

    • Geepers, you’re a busy reader! Lol. Looking forward to ALL your reviews. 🙂

  • Interesting. It’s a nice idea to have 3 books like that. I haven’t read these ones but of course I heard about them all.

  • Cool weekly thingummy. I just announce mine next reads on my Sunday BB&B and leave it to the dogs. Would.you mind if I get inspired by this? I plan to do it via FB only (coz that Acct is dead as a doornail), ill do a shout out to you of course.

    • Hahhaah! No problem, hun. That’s a good idea actually. I barely do anything on my Facebook as well. Feel free!

  • The Raven Boys was good, a bit confusing for me, but in the end, I really liked it. I hope to get to the 2nd book soon… I really loved The Scorpio Races by Maggie. If you read it, then you’re sure to like The Raven Boys. I also enjoyed her Shiver trilogy – very different from the other books, but very good. My book boyfriend Sam lives in that trilogy 🙂
I am really curious about Wicked! I really enjoyed her Lux Series, but couldn’t get into her Covenant one. Book one to her new gargoyle series is pretty good too!
I hope you enjoy these reads 🙂

    • Such a high expectation for Maggie’s books. I’m almost done with Wicked, and have enjoyed it so far.

      Thanks, Margie!

  • Good luck on the Armentrout book. I’ve had such bad luck with her books as well. I was curious about this but a friend mentioned I probably won’t like it, so I won’t be reading it.
Ahh! The Raven Boys! That’s a book I seriously need to start but I’m waiting for the last book to come out! I’m curious to see your thoughts!
Happy reading!! I’m trying to catch up on the Weird Girls series this week!

    • I’m pretty well far in to Wicked. I’m enjoying it so far, but there really is nothing that remarkable about it.

      Thanks, Nick!

  • Good luck on completing this goal for this week! I haven’t read any of these books yet but I heard good things about The Raven Cycle and Jennifer L. Armentrout books.

This week, I’m reading the last book of Razorland Trilogy: Horde! I don’t want to end it yet because I love the story and the characters but I must finish it to start a new series again. 2014 is about to end and I still have books need to read for my 2014 series challenge. I think I might read The 100 by Kass Morgan after that.

    • Oh man. I need to finish that series off! I didn’t quite enjoy the first book, but I’m willing to give it another go.

      • I didn’t enjoyed the first book when I read it years ago. I think I just skimmed the whole book until I got to the ending but when I read it again a week ago, it turn out to be interesting. I enjoyed the second and loving the third book now. I hope you’ll like it this time around!

  • You are going to love the Raven Boys! My favorite of Maggie’s by a land slide!

  • I listened to the first two installments in Stiefvater’s The Dream Thieves series, and I enjoyed then, but I didn’t love them. I suspect that the narration might have had something to do with that, so I plan on reading Blue Lily, Lily Blue. I’ve only read one book by JLA, and I didn’t really care for it, however Wicked has been getting really great reviews; I might have to cave and give her a 2nd chance.

    Carmel @ Rabid Reads

    • Oh that’s too bad about the narrator. It makes or break an audiobook for sure. 🙁

  • Lovely that you’re starting this up again, Joy!I have The Raven Boys here and I plan to read it soon as well. 🙂 I’m not a huge Jennifer Armentrout fan (I really disliked Obsidian, but I did enjoy Half-Blood), but I want to give Wicked a shot in the future. 🙂

    • She’s a habitual writer, unfortunately. I feel like if you’ve read one you’ve read them all.
