Friday Finds [3]: Penguin Vintage

DSC_0765

I had a dentist appointment last week. They had to refill a filling that wasn’t done properly. The procedure took hourssss. I swear, at the end of it all, I couldn’t close my mouth.

I have a point.

The dentist’s office is right beside an antique store, which also sells used books. How convenient, right? I had a few minutes to kill before I had to go pick up the kids from school, so I decided to spend it unwisely. It was not the first time that I’ve been there. In fact, I go there when I’m in the mood to browse for some vintage books. It was also one of the two stores where I find these Penguin gems, which, I simply adore.

I am a huge fan of these books for artistic (and aesthetic) purposes. And honestly, most of them are so worn that flicking through their pages may just cause their untimely demise. I’m probably not going to be reading them anytime soon, but I love how they look on my shelf.

At first, I only wanted to collect the orange ones, but this was also the first time that I’ve seen the green ones on their shelves.

DSC_0766Incidentally, I picked up one stork among the penguins. I didn’t know they also had that edition.

If you don’t know it by now, I am as much of a collector as I am a lover of books. So don’t be surprised when I do posts like this one. [ See it here and here].

I’ve yet to find something like this in Manila. Although that may mainly be my fault because I hardly go out and explore (because… well… it’s Manila!). They look so pretty, though, when you stack them side by side like that! <3 <3 Absolutely lovely!

    Faye at The Social Potato

    • Thanks, Faye. Yes, Manila is a pretty intimidating place to go exploring. Lol. Not to mention the traffic is pretty scary!

  • Naomi @ Nomi’s Paranormal Palace

OMG!! What an addiction us book readers have! And collecting these kinds of books, that come in colours too! Awesome!!

    Naomi @ Nomi’s Paranormal Palace

  • What a lovely store! I wish I lived somewhere that has more places like that. 🙂 I’ve definitely fallen more and more into the collecting rabbit hole, at least when it comes to books. There’s nothing cooler than finding an old edition of a favorite book.

    • Yes. And the older it gets, the better. 😀 I loved it when I have to touch it really really carefully so as not to destroy the pages. Lol.

  • Christy

Tea cups! What a cool store. I probably wouldn’t be safe in there either. You deserved those books after all of that pain and agony of the dentist.

  • Eeeekkk I hate the dentist, it’s one of my least favourite places in the world. Which reminds me, my check up is due 🙁 At least you got to visit the vintage bookstore though, those beautiful penguins are definitely artistic!

  • I JUST got home from the dentist. Man, my face/mouth is throbbing. I just had a cleaning, but my gums are so sensitive that it’s torturous, to say the least. My point… we do NOT have a bookstore anywhere near my dentist. 🙁 I love that you do, and that it was such a successful visit! That’s a fantastic gift to give yourself after suffering through a tough dentist appointment. I hope your mother is back to normal now! 🙂

    • By “mother”, I’m going to assume you meant my mouth. Lol! Damn autocorrect! 🙂

  • The green ones are super pretty! Also, I love it when books look a bit beat up and well read. 😉 Those tea cups are adorable as well!

    • Aren’t they? I thought it would look funny with the orange ones, but they actually look great together. I so want those tea cups!

  • I had no idea there were storks… I’ve never seen one.
I love your new old books! I’m not a big fan of the new Penguin editions, because they have that strange back that makes me all dizzy if I have to look at more than five of them on a bookshelf. It’s a shame, really, becaue the covers are very pretty, but, well, I mostly see the backs when they’re in a book case, and it makes me dizzy.

    • I didn’t realize they make storks too. So now, I’m every time I’m at the second hand bookstore, I’ll have to keep an eye out for them.

Honestly, Penguin releases so many versions of their covers that it makes my head spin. I figure if look for this particular one, it won’t be as confusing. Lol.

      Thanks, Felicia!

  • When I grow up and get a nice big house where I can build floor to ceiling book shelves, I’d definitely do what you’re doing and hope it will look just as amazing! :] Have you ever noticed what a wonderful smell second hand bookstores have? I love that smell, it instantly soothes me and makes me smile.

    • That’s my dream, too. I really want to build a house around a library. And yes, if someone can bottle that smell, I’ll buy them in pallets. Lol.

  • Melanie (YA Midnight Reads)

omg, I want them! they all look so good next to one and another, what a nice buy, joy!

  • It’s a great collection, orange and green. I also want a store like that here!

    • I think so, too. Unfortunately, I don’t have much room for a lot of them. I probably will not be adding anymore to this collection. *sad panda face*

  • You go for the books I’ll spend time with the teacups for now. Gosh what a pretty store! I bet it smells divine!!

    • Hahahah! Tea and book nerds, I swear. 😀

  • Looks like a gorgeous place to shop 😀 (Okay, I don’t do used things, but so so happy it’s perfect for you. <3) Dentist is the worst 🙁 I hate going there. Sigh. Hope you are doing okay. <3 but yay for going to buy more books 😀 They all look pretty awesome ;p I hope you will love them all Joy. <3 happy reading sweetie 🙂

  • THESE ARE SO COOL!!! EEK! I want to go these! 🙂

The pictures are pretty dang awesome, too! And those shelves after shelves of books… *sigh* It warms my heart, 🙂

    Great Post!

A Recent Blog Post: Does the Guilt Crush You? @ My Little Corner For Books (Involves hiccuping chihuahuas, awesomeness/weirdness depending on how you look at it and guilty confessions about DNF-ing books! XD)

    • Drool worthy, right? Imagine having those shelves in your house? Sigh.

  • Well at least you had a little happiness after enduring the dentist! It does feel like hours when you go, right? Ugh! I love collecting, too, I have a matching set of Agatha Christie and I used to obsessively hunt them down on ebay. I’m still missing a few of the hard to find ones. The Penguins look great on your shelf! 🙂

    • I’ve never actually read an Agatha Christie before. I know I should endeavour to add her to my bucket list, though. Good luck with your treasure hunt, Rachel. 🙂

  • I love that you have found so many!! I so want to visit this store!

    • Thanks, Ali. There were a lot more, but I didn’t want to be broke after having spent money at the dentist, too. Lol.

  • What a cute shop! I wish we had a local used book store, because I’d prefer to get my titles from the small guy as opposed to Amazon, but I’m not prepared to drive an hour out of my way to do so. Yes, I live in the boonies, and that’s just the way I like it. LOL Those covers look well loved, and are so pretty on your white shelf.

    Carmel @ Rabid Reads

    • It is. I literally could spend a whole day browsing. They had some interesting stuff in there other than books. Boonies in Quebec? I bet that’s a beautiful place, though. 🙂

  • Wow- that looks like a really cool shop and one I would love to get lost in. I haven’t really started collecting books until recently…some older vintage finds as well. I love the ones you found. I’m sure they will look fantastic in your library. Happy Friday!

    • Thanks, Christina. It is definitely worth the pain of a session on a dentist’s chair. 🙂

  • Beautiful! I have that collecting instinct as well — but not much space to store the books. One day I will have built-in bookcases.

That store looks like amazing fun. For a second I thought those were photographs of inside your house! Ha!
